Taos Super Side Sandal

I may have received the Taos Super Side sandals from Taos Footwear, but I can honestly say after months of wear, these are the real deal.

If you have forefoot pain due to metatarsalgia or hallux rigidus or midfoot pain due to arthritic changes, the Taos Super Side sandal is a must try.

The hook and loop (velcro) straps allow for a customized fit and are lined with soft, waterproof neoprene. No blisters for me! The forefoot straps conceal the bunions nicely and don’t come undone.

The chunky outsole provides stability and support. The arch support is perfectly placed and feels great. It also keeps the foot from bending too much through the stride, protecting those forefoot and midfoot joints, tendons and ligaments. And yes, they’re great for hallux rigidus big toes.

Taos Super Side water-friendly sandal

The footbed provides cushioning but not that marshmallow-y memory foam feeling, rather a firm cushion that revives tired feet and puts a little spring in the step!

My sandals are all dry and ready to go again today after a wet hike near the river last night!

The fit is true. I normally wear a size 10 medium and the size 10 in the Taos Super Side sandal fits perfectly (I’d size up if between sizes). Available in whole sizes 6-11 for $140 from Taos Footwear, Amazon and Zappos.

Those of us in cooler climates look forward to sandal season all year long – that sometimes too-brief window of time when feet can be sock-free and open to the breeze.  But if you have feet that need extra support, we probably don’t have to tell you that finding sandals with arch support can be a challenge.  Join us as we round up a collection of great options to keep you looking good and feeling great all summer long.

You may notice many of our sandals with arch support have a back strap. This is intentional, as we recently learned from Dr. Cathleen McCarthy, a top podiatrist in Phoenix and author of Podiatry Shoe Review, that sandals with back straps are a must if you suffer from hammertoes or bunions. The rear foot control that a back strap provides discourages toe-gripping to keep the sandal on (this motion speeds up the progression of hammertoes…and bunions.)   Even if bunions and hammertoes aren’t an issue for your feet, you may still appreciate the security of a back strap, but we’ve also included some supportive slip-on options.

Dansko Season: APMA-approved sandal

Clogs are making yet another comeback for 2025 and I’m happy to see that Dansko has kept this cutie around for yet another “Season.” Two velcro straps allow for a customized fit (even though the ankle strap looks like a real buckle). If you struggle with arthritis of the big toe (hallux rigidus) or need a rocker sole shoe to take pressure off the forefoot, the Dansko Season is a great choice. Plus it offers excellent arch support and cushioning for the sole.

Sizes: euro 36-42 (5.5-12) • Width: M • Price: $61-130 from Dansko, Zappos & Amazon

Vionic Walk Max Wanderer

“Really surprised by these, they blow my Teva and Chaco sandals out of the water! I can’t wait to wear them all summer. Recommend sizing down a half size from your Vionic sneaker/boot size.” Vionic customer

Incorporating Vionic’s newest and most lightweight midsole (Super Critical Foam) infused with nitrogen, the Vionic Walk Max Wanderer offers enhanced arch support, deep hee cup and three padded, adjustable straps.

Sizes: 5-13 • Widths: M & W • Price: $63-150 from Vionic Shoes, Zappos and Amazon.

Revere Emerald: APMA approved sandal

If your podiatrist insists on you wearing orthotics even in the summer, the Revere Emerald comes in clutch. A removable contoured footbed allows for the use of personal orthotics and three adjustable straps (forefoot, instep and ankle) ensure a secure fit.

Sizes: 5-12 • Widths: M & W • Price: $169.95 from Comfort Co. Shoes and Amazon.

Skechers Arch Fit- City Catch

If you like the Skechers price point, but have found them to be less than supportive, think again! Skechers new machine-washable Arch Fit collection features shoes and sandals with podiatrist-certified arch support, contoured memory foam insoles and bunion-concealing stretch uppers.

Sizes: 5-13 • Width: M • Price: $53-55 from Amazon & Zappos

Abeo Solstice

As a The Walking Company customer so aptly put it, “It’s so nice to have a shoe manufacturer that not only takes care of my orthopedic needs, but also my aesthetic needs.” The Abeo Solstice sandal features a built-in orthotic footbed with enhanced arch support and a real buckle for a secure fit around the ankle. We love that the Solstice comes in both a neutral and metatarsal (for high arches) insole.

Sizes: 5-11 • Width: M (run slightly wide) • Price: $79 from The Walking Company & Nordstrom

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
Naot Kayla

Minimalist but with maximum arch support. Basic design yet beautiful. This is the Naot Kayla. It’s been one of Naot’s bestsellers for years and for good reason. A cork and latex footbed molds to your foot’s shape over time and a 1.5″ wedge heel provides just enough lift. Available in 25 colors!

Sizes: Euro 35-43 (4-12.5) • Width: M & W • Price: $119-145 from Naot, Zappos, Nordstrom & Amazon

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
SAS Pampa Sandal

SAS Pampa sandal:  Every Zappos customer that left a review for the sandal awarded it five stars for comfort–every single one so far!  A contoured footbed with soft suede lining conforms to the natural arch and curves of the foot.

Extra cushioning at the ball-of-foot and heel comes as a welcome relief for those suffering with plantar fasciitis or metatarsalgia (forefoot pain). Available in whole and half sizes 5-12 (including hard-to-find 10.5 and 11.5), medium and wide widths at Zappos, and Amazon.

Orthofeet Paloma

The Orthofeet Paloma will comfort your troubled feet. A removable orthotic insole allows for the use of Orthofeet’s specialized Arch Booster system (a small orthotic device that can be placed under the insole for added arch support). Adjustable straps and a mild rocker sole enhance the overall comfort and support of the Orthofeet Paloma sandal. Find it in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $97.95 at Orthofeet.com.

I tried the Ugg Goldenstar platform sandal on last summer at Englin’s Fine Footwear, our beloved Indy shoe store. They felt great, but at the time I was convinced they made my feet look larger than life. Guess what? I no longer care as a card-carrying member of the We Do Not Care Club. So I bought a pair this spring. I love them.

You can see many of the comfort features of the Ugg Goldenstar in my video above, but let me tell you the finer points here that I didn’t mention:

  • The raised footbed is actually EVA foam covered with a soft recycled polyester. It’s a dense foam that doesn’t cave to pressure.
  • The sockliner that covers the footbed incorporates a peppermint-based anti-odor treatment. I don’t smell the mint, but let’s hope it does its job.
  • The fit is true for my size 10 medium width feet with bunions. Like I mentioned in the video, if you have wider feet, the straps may be too short.
  • I would recommend the Ugg Goldenstar for anyone suffering with hallux rigidus: the soft suede uppers won’t irritate a bone spur on big toe, plus the outsole is thick protecting the forefoot through the stride (amazingly easy to walk in still).
  • The style and color is versatile and goes with jeans, sundresses, wide leg pants and casual skirts.

The Ugg Goldenstar platform sandal is available in five lovely colors, sizes 5-12, medium width for $120 from Ugg, Nordstrom, Zappos and Amazon.

No matter the season, bunions refuse to conform to ill-fitting footwear. No worries, we’ve got you (and your bunion) covered! See six of our favorite sandals for bunions. All feature soft leather uppers, vamps that don’t cross the bunion area and other comfort features to carry you through the day painlessly. Then hop down to the bottom of the article to see 21 more brands and styles recommended by our Facebook community. Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite shoes or sandals for bunions that have helped you.

STYLISH SANDALS FOR BUNIONS

Dansko Dayna

“I have a bunion and whenever I purchase shoes, they have to feel good and not bother my bunion. These are great. The strap on the inside part of my foot hides the bunion, but, more important the strap does not bother the bunion.”

If you’ve tried Birkenstock but for some reason or another the fit and feel isn’t for you, give the Dansko Dayna a try. Not only is the footbed soft and supportive, the straps work in your favor according to Dansko customer Connie:

Find the Dansko Dayna in euro sizes 36-42 (5.5-11.5) for $140 from Dansko, Zappos and Amazon.

Birkenstock Arizona EVA

For under $50, the Birkenstock Arizona EVA supports the arches, conceals the bunions and tidies up well! EVA refers to the material used (ethylene vinyl acetate)– a high-quality, lightweight, elastic material with very good cushioning. As a result, it smooths out slight irregularities in the floor and ensures that every step is softly cushioned. I have a pair and find the support not quite as enhanced as my regular cork/latex Birkenstocks, but better than Crocs! And they come in such pretty colors now. Find a pair in women’s sizes 5-12 (men’s 6-13), narrow and regular widths for $49.95 from Birkenstock, Zappos and Amazon.

Naot Throne

“Absolutely beautiful sandal, with soft, bunion-friendly leather! This shoe is a true narrow width; I would not recommend them to a person with a wide foot. For reference, I wear an 8N in flats, and I purchased a size 38, which is what I usually wear in Naot sandals.” – Zappos customer

Do you have a narrow to medium width foot with bunions? The lovely Naot Throne features soft leather criss-cross straps that won’t irritate that area of your foot along with good arch support. A 1 3/4″ wedge elevates the heel a little which is good for plantar fasciitis. Available in euro sizes 35-42 (4.5-11) for $168 from Naot, Zappos and Nordstrom.

Taos Gift 2

The Taos Gift 2 sandal is the trifecta of arch support, metatarsal support and bunion concealment! It’s been around for years and we hope Taos keeps it for years to come. This is just one of hundreds of 5 star Zappos reviews for the Gift 2:

“This is my third pair of these sandals. I have a hard time finding comfortable (and reasonably attractive) sandals due to a significant bunion on my left foot. These are soft and accommodating, not to mention effectively hiding the embarrassing bunion. They look nice and come in several different colors. They hold up well. True to size.”

Find the Taos Gift 2 in sizes 6-12 for $135 from Taos Footwear, Zappos, and Amazon.

Baretraps Denni

“These shoes are great. I have horrible feet – bunions, flat feet, arthritis, hammer toes, etc. These shoes work great for my feet. Good arch support, cushion is wonderful and the strap hides the bunions without hurting or rubbing.” – Amazon customer

An affordable sandal for bunions, the Baretraps Denni supports the arches and cushions the soles. A soft manmade upper covers bunions without irritating them. Available in sizes 6-11, medium and wide widths for $49-59 from Amazon and Nordstrom Rack.

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
Halsa Denia

“The first time I wore these, I walked all over a mall for two hours and they were very comfortable. No issues, no blisters, no pain. They are fashionable but also perfectly cover my bunion, which is rare for a sandal. I also wore these on vacation and walked a LOT without an issue. They felt true to size (I had the 8 wide). Totally love these, and since it’s very hard to find wide summer shoes that cover my bunions, it’s worth the price.” – Zappos customer

If bunions are just one of your many foot maladies, consider the Halsa Denia sandal. The adjustable leather straps conceal the bunions (and bunionettes) while the orthotic-style footbed supports the arches and cushions the heel.

Find the Halsa Denia in sizes 6-11, medium and wide width for $99-124.95 from and Nordstrom and Amazon.

Other bunion-friendly sandals that deserve mention: Orthofeet Lyra (stretch-knit, wide widths), Alegria Valerie (a tie-up sandal with enclosed heel–could fit orthotic), Skechers Arch Fit City sandals (stretch-knit, good support and affordable).

Plantar Faciitis sandals – which are the best? See Kirsten’s recommendations to a reader’s request…

Hello, Kirsten!
I have been reading your blog for a few months now. Your blog has helped me on my never-ending search for shoes. I have been living with plantar fasciitis for 2 1/2 years. After 1 1/2 years of treatment I finally gave up and had surgery. It has now been a year since my bone spur removal and heel resection. I still have pain. I have tried 3 different custom orthotics which lead to new pain in my knees, hips and lower back. I gave up on them.

Your blog lead me 2 months ago to Alegria Paloma. A welcome relief. I still have pain when the shoes are off but at least I can walk now without pain. I can not tell you how much I appreciate you for helping me find these shoes. I need to know what other brands of plantar faciitis sandals might help me? I think I should have a rocker bottom as well as a very stiff sole, no flex seems to help, but I think the key is the cushioning to keep my knees and hips from aching. Thanks so much for you and your blog!

I am very sorry to hear about your post-surgical heel pain. Yet, I’m happy to hear you’ve found temporary relief while wearing certain styles of plantar fasciitis shoes from Alegria footwear–a godsend to many with PF, over-pronation problems and other foot maladies. Since you’re well into sandal season in California, let me recommend five styles that won’t over-flex while providing good cushioning and support. Alegria sandals are a great place to start, but I’d like to show you a variety of styles from reputable comfort brands.

best sandals for plantar fasciitis
Vionic Mar

“These are cute and they really help me manage my plantar fasciitis pain. There’s a mild break in period to get used to the support, but I got zero blisters and can now wear these shoes very comfortably with almost every spring and summer outfit I have!” – Vionic customer Mrs Lindy611

Vionic has done it again with the stylish Mar platform sandal! Enhanced arch support takes strain off the fascia and a deep heel cup with back strap keeps the feet secure. An added bonus for those that hate velcro closures–it’s a real buckle! Available in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $85-135 from Zappos, Amazon & DSW.

Taos The Show

“I have a very hard time finding a comfortable shoe. I have 3 neuromas in each foot and if that’s not bad enough I have plantar fasciitis in one too! I bought the tan pair and they look so cute with flare or straight leg jeans, shorts or even a summer dress. I do a lot of walking too and these are steady and secure on my feet. Fit great. I highly recommend!” -Taos customer Bev

Adjustability, excellent arch and metatarsal support, shock-absorbing cushion all in a good-looking sandal. Many A+ reviews for fit, comfort and style. The Show by Taos is available in whole sizes 6-11, medium and wide widths for $139-155 from Taos Footwear, Zappos and Amazon.

Kuru Coda Muse

“As a teacher, I’m up and down on my feet all day. I have severe plantar fasciitis and these shoes ensure I don’t end the day crying.” – Kuru customer Sharon

The Kuru Coda Muse features Kuru’s patented, built-in KURUSOLE–a heel-hugging technology that flexes with each step to hug your heels and support your arches to help fight plantar fasciitis pain. There’s elastic goring at the top of each strap to accommodate different foot shapes. Available in whole sizes 5-12, medium width for $139 from Kuru Footwear.

Cushionaire Luna

“I’ve worn these for three years and finally getting a new pair. I suffer from plantar fasciitis and these sandals are super comfy to wear all day in the summer. Great, cheaper alternative to Birks.”- Amazon customer Chel

This Birkenstock Mayari dupe scores high marks for comfort and plantar fasciitis relief for a fraction of the Birk price tag. While the straps are made of faux leather, the cork footbed is covered in genuine suede. The arch support isn’t as aggressive as Birkenstock and there’s no metatarsal support, so keep that in mind. Available in sizes 6-12, medium and wide widths for $34.99 from Amazon.

Fitflop Lulu

“Great looking shoes. I bought them for the arch for my plantar fasciitis and they are very helpful. The leather is very soft. Comfortable from day one.” – Zappos customer Carey B.

This is just one of many Fitflop Lulu styles, but we endorse it because of the ankle strap which helps secure the heel. The MicroWOBBLEBOARD™ EVA midsole features a high-density heel, low-density midsection, and mid-density toe cap that provides arch support and firm cushioning. Available in sizes 5-11 for $68-110 from Fitflop, Zappos, Amazon and Nordstrom.

We’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment about your favorite sandals for plantar fasciitis.

My bad! In the video I cast doubt that the midsole on the Crocs Brooklyn Buckle sandal is actual cork, but the description on the Crocs website says otherwise (“cork-wrapped” midsole). Either way, it does look like real cork which elevates this platform sandal above the other Crocs Brooklyn styles.

I think I’ll get a lot of wear out of these this summer: fun pop of color, good arch support, firm yet cushioned insole and adjustable buckles. The heel height is just under two inches with a one inch platform.

The Crocs Brooklyn Cork Buckle sandal is available in whole sizes 4-11 for $64.99 from Crocs, Zappos and Amazon.

I chose these over the Crocs Brooklyn Cork sandal with the back strap because of the adjustable forefoot buckle. I wish there was a style with a back strap and adjustable forefoot strap for picky toes.

If you have any of the Crocs Brooklyn styles, chime in on our Facebook post about how you like them or any concerns you have!

I could be late to the nautical party, but I’m crossing my fingers and winter toes that fisherman sandals are still in for 2025. The thought of a breezy yet toe-covering sandal sounds perfect for easing my feet into spring. I’ve compiled a collection of seven comfortable fisherman sandals for those of us with challenging feet, starting with my own review of the White Mountain Glove sandal.

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
White Mountain Glove

The style is cute and overall, the sandal is a good value for the price. – Zappos customer

Try the trend without breaking the bank! The White Mountain glove fisherman sandal features a real leather upper, faux leather cushioned insole, adjustable velcro closure and 1.5″ lug sole. Arch support is minimal. Available in sizes 6-11, medium width for $39-85 from:

On Foot 202 sandal

Leather is butter soft and the inner soles mold to your feet. Color is spot on. Feet are happy. – Nordstrom customer

A new-to-me-brand from Spain, On Foot shoes feature a contoured double-density memory foam atop a cork midsole and an anti-slip rubber outsole. Soft leather uppers and a roomy toe box make the 202 comfortable fisherman sandal a great option for bunions. A few reviews mention the shoe runs a little short. Available in medium width, euro sizes 36-41 (5.5-9.5) from:

Ryka Echo Fisherman sandal

I can’t say enough about how wonderful these shoes are. Like a lot of people I have feet issues. These shoes felt good right out of the box. No rubbing. No pressure points. My insoles fit perfectly. Plus they’re so stylish. – Ryka customer

Here’s a sporty fisherman sandal by Ryka that covers the whole forefoot (in case your pinky toe typically gets caught in straps). Ryka specializes in footwear that’s roomy at the toe and snug at the heel–great for those difficult-to-fit combination feet. Available in medium and wide widths, sizes 5-12 from:

Munro Marley

11 Narrow that actually fit are very hard to find (the reason why I scooped them all up immediately after reading reviews). These sandals hug and support the entire length of the foot. -Nordstrom customer

If your toes are ready to show off, consider the Munro Marley! I just read that this quality brand is sadly closing up shop, so snatch them up while you can. The Marley features moderate arch support, lightweight EVA outsole, velcro closure and microfiber cushioned insole. Available in narrow to extra wide widths, sizes 5-12 from:

Fitflop Gracie

These are lovely conformable sandals. I have wide feet and there is no pinching at the sides. – Fitflop customer

If you’re not a fun of the chunky lug sole, the Fitflop Gracie is for you, especially if your feet are on the wider side. The Gracie features real leather upper a real buckle (no velcro) and Fitflop’s Dynamicush™ footbed (not quite as supportive as their denser Microwobbleboard™ footbed). Available in medium width (fits wide), sizes 5-11 from:
