Hallux Rigidus. It’s a literal pain in the big toe. Whether it’s caused by arthritis, a sports injury, or plain old crappy genetics, we’re all in the same boat when it comes to finding comfortable shoes for hallux rigidus.

Respected podiatrist and foot/ankle specialist Dr. Tom Biernacki explains the condition well over at his wonderful YouTube channel. He states, “A shoe can make all the difference in the world.” When it comes to the best shoes for hallux rigidus he recommends footwear with a stiff heel, stiff midsole and a non-flexible forefoot.

Keeping Dr. Biernacki’s wisdom in mind, I’ve tried my best to round up the most comfortable (and stylish as possible) women’s shoes for hallux rigidus. Yours truly had a cheilectomy on my right big toe last summer due to hallux rigidus caused by rheumatoid arthritis, so I have first-foot experience with a few of these. Even if you have turf toe (a sprain or injury to the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the big toe), you’ll find these women’s shoe recommendations helpful!

Athletic Shoes

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
1. Topo Athletic Atmos

My personal favorite fitness shoe is the Topo Athletic Atmos (or any of their styles with a thicker sole). I love this brand so much. The toe box is wide, the arch support is perfect (so is the cushioning), and the fit at the heel is snug–plus a rocker sole! I wore them pre-cheilectomy and post-cheilectomy. You can watch my video review to find out more about the Atmos style. I also wear the Magnifly model for every day walks and fitness classes (Zumba and Les Mills Body Pump at the Y).

Sizes: 6-12 • Width: M • Price: $106-129 from Topo Athletic, Amazon & Zappos

2. Hoka Bondi 9

Hoka fitness shoes: Hoka shoes (specifically the Bondi style) are one of the best running shoes for hallux rigidus on the market. The combination of rocker sole, thick outsole, enhanced cushioning and wide toe box means the big toe is protected from cramping and over-flexing. Find the most current Hoka Bondi 9 in a variety of neutrals and brights.

•Sizes: 4-12 • Widths: M, W, XW • Price: $175 from Hoka, Zappos & Amazon

If your hallux rigidus is severe, consider the Hoka Skyward with a carbon fiber plate that stiffens the forefoot area of the shoe preventing it from bending and protecting the big toe joint.

3. New Balance Fresh Foam x 1080

“A friend with hallux rigidus turned me onto these and they are fantastic… the lower drop puts less pressure on my big toe.” – Zappos customer

A generous toe box, gentle forefoot rocker sole, and plush but stable platform make the New Balance Fresh Foam x 1080 a great option for hallux rigidus sufferers.

Sizes: 5-13 • Widths: XN, N, M, W • Price: $129-164 from New Balance, Zappos & Amazon

4. Skechers Go Run Consistent 2.0

“I looked for and purchased several shoes to accommodate my Hallux Rigidus (rigid toe) and a bone spur. None worked. They usually were too tight across the ball of my foot where I have the bone spur on the top of my foot. These shoes are perfect. I got the wide because that is what my podiatrist recommended. Most wides were to loose fitting, but these were great. Also, they have just enough “rocker” to keep my rigid toe from hurting.”

If you’re on a budget and don’t want to fork over $170 for Hokas, consider the Skechers Go Run “Consistent” line of running shoes. Read this review from a happy Zappos customer!

Sizes: 5-11 • Width: M • Price: $63-70 from Skechers & Amazon

Casual Shoes

5. Fitflop F-Mode Sneakers

Fitflop has diversified their footwear collection to the point it’s hard to know which footbed you’re getting. Good news! The F-Mode footbed features their original podiatrist recommended Microwobbleboard technology (three levels of targeted cushioning plus anatomical arch support). A generous toe box and sturdy yet lightweight flatform keep sensitive toes happy.

Sizes: 5-11 • Width: M • Price: $80-130 from Fitflop & Amazon

6. Ros Hommerson Dannon

If you have difficult-to-fit feet (narrow or even extra wide width), the Ros Hommerson Dannon is definitely worth a try! This comfortable loafer is another excellent recommendation from a member of the Hallux Rigidus Support Group.

  • Sizes: 6-13 • Widths: N, M, W, XW • Price: $129-154 from Amazon & DSW

7. Ariat Fatbaby Chelsea

We love the new Chelsea boot style of popular Ariat Fatbaby boot! A generous toe box, moderate arch support and thick outsole make this cute boot a excellent choice for hallux rigidus. Available in a variety of colors and patterns, sizes 5.5-12, medium and wide width (for some color choices) for $109.95 from Ariat, Amazon and Zappos.

8. Taos Ultimate

Zappos customer Jennifer says all we need to know about the Taos Ultimate mary jane:

“I have the World’s Worst Feet. Hallux rigidus and no arches. Shoes that don’t make matters worse are really hard to find. These are wonderful. The arch support is fantastic and they have a nice wide toebox. The adjustable velcro gives a snug fit and they are super cute. Yay.”

The Taos Ultimate is available in sizes 6-11.5 for $185 from Taos Footwear, Zappos and Amazon.

9. Birkenstock Bend

I love these shoes. I own a pair and recommend them to everyone that suffers from plantar fasciitis to bunions to hallux rigidus. (see my Youtube review). The footbed is contoured to support arches, heel and metatarsals. The sole is thick and doesn’t overly bend (the name of the shoe is a misnomer), protecting the forefoot. The toe box is generous and foot-shaped. A+. Available in euro sizes 36-41 (6-10.5–I take a 41 for my size 10 feet) for $140-150 from Birkenstock, Nordstrom, Zappos and Amazon.

10. Alegria Origyn

“No pain with Hallux Rigidus and large bone spur. I’ve tried so many nursing shoes and other rocker shoes, but these with the cork sole are the ones. I will be getting another pair in another color.” – Zappos customer

The Alegria Orygin features a removable (and replaceable) cork, latex and memory foam footbed with excellent arch support. A slip-resistant rocker sole gently propels the foot through the stride taking pressure off painful toes and heels.

Sizes: 5-12 • Widths: M & W • Price: $54-130 from Zappos, Nordstrom & Amazon

11. Fitflop F-LUMA chunky loafers

Fitflop’s take on the chunky loafer includes their trademark Microwobbleboard midsole (triple-density cushioning follows three footstep stages–firm heel, soft middle, medium at toes). The substantial one inch platform sole means limited forefoot/toe bend during the stride–a win-win for hallux rigidus toes!

•Sizes 5-11 • Width: M • Price: $105-169 from Fitflop & Amazon

12. Dansko Frankie

The Dansko Frankie Chelsea boot comes recommended by a few members of Kristi Ferguson’s wonderful resource, The Hallux Rigidus Support Group. Featuring a rocker sole, generous toe box and cushioned footbed, the Frankie propels the foot gently through the stride taking pressure off the forefoot.

Sizes: euro 36-42 (5.5-11.5) • Width: M • Price: $180 from Dansko, Zappos & Amazon

Sandals

13. Ugg Goldenstar

“Saved me. I have Hallux Rigidus aka Turf Toe aka Big Stiff Toe from arthritis and a bone spur on top. Flat feet and low volume feet. These are pretty stiff; soft but supportive with no high arch support that feels like a rock. They are adjustable. They are perfection”

I ordered a pair after reading the good reviews and while they look a little clunky on my size 10 feet, I love the fit and feel–so I wear them with confidence! See my video review here.

Sizes: 5-12 • Width: M • Price: $84-120 from Ugg, Zappos & Nordstrom

14. Taos Super Side

I wore these all over the place last summer from a Canadian camping trip, to long walks down the river path near our home, to North Carolina beaches. Next stop–Akumal, Mexico. I love the Taos Super Side for its enhanced arch support, thick outsole and mild rocker, soft wateproof neoprene straps that adjust over the toes (and bone spurs). See my complete review here. (By the way, I wore these pre-cheilectomy and post!)

Sizes 6-11 • Width: M • Price: $89-160 from Taos Footwear, Amazon and Zappos.

15. Wolky Jewel

The Wolky Jewel sandal has been around as long as I can remember and shows no sign of retiring–I used to have a pair and sadly donated them! The firm yet shock-absorbing rocker outsole gently propels the foot forward through the stride taking pressure off the forefoot. The three adjustable straps offer a good fit for narrow to wide feet and a removable anatomic footbed provides good arch support.

Sizes 36-44 (5.5-12.5) • Width: M • Price: $189 from Amazon and Nordstrom.

Dress Shoes for Hallux Rigidus

16. Aerosoles Cosmos

Recommended by members of the Hallux Rigidus Support Group, the Aerosoles Cosmos (and similar platform heel iterations) could be the golden ticket for getting through a special occasion without wincing in pain all night. The 3″ stable block heel and 1.25″ platform work together elevate the foot without the drastic toe to heel angle. An Ortholite footbed provides good cushioning to sensitive feet. Available in a variety of colors/textures in sizes 5-12, medium and wide width for $99-135 from Aerosoles, Nordstrom, Amazon and Zappos.

17. Abeo Avenue

Thank you, Abeo, for giving us a comfortable dress sandal with a modest 2″ block heel that looks modern (dare I say svelte?). The forefoot strap adjusts to accommodate big toe bone spurs or a wider forefoot. The footbed offers arch support and is available in a metatarsal option with a met pad to alleviate forefoot pain. Find the Abeo Avenue in six colors, sizes 5-11 for $149.95 from The Walking Company.

18. Ros Hommerson Pammy

If you must dress up for a special occasion and can manage a heel for a few hours, the Pammy heel by Ros Hommerson is one of the kinder ones. This comfortable heel features a round toe box, cushioned insole and 1/2″ platform and 3″ heel. Both buckles adjust for a great fit over the instep. Find the Ros Hommerson Pammy in sizes 5-13, medium and wide widths for $159.95 from Walking Company and Amazon.

19. Aerosoles Soir

Another closed toe dress option for hallux rigidus toes, the Aerosoles Soir features a 1″ platform and 2.5″ block heel. An Ortholite footbed keeps sensitive feet cushioned well.

• Sizes: 5-12 • Width: M • Price $51-175 from Aerosoles, Nordstrom, Amazon & DSW

I love my Hokas BUT am not sure they’re the best shoes for Zumba. I have been doing Zumba through my gym’s Zoom classes throughout the pandemic and wearing Ryka Vida RZA training shoes since they’re good for both lateral and forward/back motion BUT they do irritate my poor feet some. Has anyone found a good sneaker for Zumba that supports Hallus Rigidis AND is orthotic-friendly? Hokas were made for tuning so they’re not good for lateral movement. I would also love advice on what to wear for barre classes. Going barefoot is not for me! (PS: Owing to bunions/narrow heels/wide toes, I often need wide shoes.)

I have Hallux rigidus in both big toes .Whats the best dress shoe that you have worn. With an upturned front? I need shoes for dress when I am working on V and commercials . Liek with a dress or pantsuit. Thanks so much. I am in agony after working on a movie set with the wrong shoes. and I have a herniated disk. Ouch!

I ordered the Abeo Avenue for my son’s wedding based on this review. It was the first pair of shoes that I felt were pretty enough for dress since I was diagnosed with hallux limitus and bunions ten years ago. AND THEY WERE SO COMFORTABLE!! I’m going to be ordering more colors soon. I was on my feet over eight hours in them and zero pain. Thanks for what you do.

I am SO glad to hear this. That is one day when you certainly don’t have time for foot pain. Congrats to your son!

I suffer from Hallix Limitus and have also had two excruciating bouts of Plantar Fasciitis in the past. I bought the Birkinstock Bends on the recommendation of this site and I’m over the moon that I did! They are perfect in every way! Due to the two surgeries I had for HL, my right foot is now wider. However, because the toe box of the Birks is so roomy, my baby toe has never been happier! These Birks are so comfortable, I don’t even have to wear my orthotics, which until now, I’ve worn in every pair of shoes I’ve owned in the past 35 years. I am so, so happy with my new Birks I can’t say enough about them. Highly recommend!!!

Hi Tammy. They are wonderful shoes. You just can’t beat the Birkenstock footbed for heel, arch and metatarsal support. Glad they work so well for you.

At last, a recurring trend we achy-footed gals can get behind: the Chelsea boot.  Credited to Queen Victoria’s shoemaker, the style is sturdy, close-fitting around the ankle, with elastic goring on the sides and a heel tab in the back. Worn as riding or “paddock” boots in the 1800s, the style gained popularity among the equestrian community, worn by men and women alike. In the 1950s, a group of young artists, film directors and socialites from the Chelsea area of west London, incorporated the boot into their “look.” The Chelsea boot soon became an icon of the Mod subculture of London making its way onto the feet of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

We’ve rounded up 7 comfortable chelsea boots for a variety of foot problems. Take a look!

1. Eco Modtray Chelsea Boot

Our first comfortable chelsea boot is podiatrist-recommended. Dr. Paul Macaulay, a UK-trained podiatrist practicing in Singapore speaks highly of the Ecco Modtray chelsea boot in this video.

“If you’re suffering with plantar fasciitis or achilles tendonitis, then considering your heel height is going to be really important. We’re going to be looking for a heel height of 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters,” (Roughly a half inch to one inch) – Dr. Paul’s advice

The Ecco Modtray Chelsea features a rounded toe, soft full-grain leathers, removable insole and 1.5″ lug sole with 3/4″ platform. The other boot Dr. Paul references in the video is the Ecco Nouvelle style available through Amazon.

Sizes: Euro 35-42 (4-11) • Width: M • Price: $97-225 from Ecco US, Zappos & Amazon

2. Ariat Fatbaby Twin Gore Chelsea

Give the toes some room! The Ariat Fatbaby Chelsea boot features a wide, rounded toe box–perfect for bunioned feet. Add Ariat’s 4LR™ technology and you’ve got yourself a lightweight yet supportive chelsea boot that’s on trend for concert-going, market-shopping, classroom-teaching and yes, barn chores too. We love all the fun color and pattern combos available (but they do come in neutrals too).

Sizes: 5/5-12 • Widths: M & W (certain sizes and colors) • Price: $87.99-119 from Ariat, Zappos & Amazon

comfortable chelsea boots rieker
3. Rieker Amalia 65 Chelsea boot

I gasped when I saw the colors these come in. Dramatic? Perhaps. But wait until YOU see the bottle green ones. Keep the tootsies toasty this winter in the Rieker Amalia 65 with its faux suede upper and warm faux fur lining. A padded footbed (non-removable) cushions the soles while a shock-absorbing lug sole provides good traction.

Sizes: Euro 36-42 (5.5-10.5) • Width: M • Price: $120-135 from Rieker US, Zappos, Nordstrom & Comfort One Shoes

4. Stegmann Lieben

Oh my gosh, these booties are perfect. I’ve been on the search for a dressier, but comfy, bootie for over a year. The toe box is just wide enough, there’s just enough arch support, and the bootie itself is so lightweight I hardly feel them. – Stegmann customer

More of a chelsea shoe, the Stegmann Lieben is for feet that crave Birkenstock-type footbeds (cork and latex that conforms to the foot shape over time). The footbed is also removable and may accommodate an orthotic. The goring hits below the ankle bone so no worries about it rubbing.

5. Frankie4 Liberty

“These may be the most comfortable boots I’ve ever owned! The cushioned support is amazing and feels so good on my arches. I work in retail and I’m able to stand in these for hours with minimal back pain. They look great with my bootcut and wide leg jeans, as well as skirts and dresses. True to size.”- Elizabeth, Frankie4 customer

Sole Hero® Footbed in the Frankie4 Liberty Chelsea

Can a Chelsea boot be both sleek and supportive at the same time? Minimalistic with maximum foot support? Elegant yet durable? Yes, yes and yes. Welcome the podiatrist-designed Frankie4 Liberty boot with a Sole Hero® Footbed (layered footbed with heel, arch and forefoot support). Need more room in the toe box? Comfortable Chelsea Boots
6. Lems Chelsea Boot

Native to Boulder, Colorado, Lems specializes in zero-drop, foot-shaped shoes and boots. Read through the positive reviews from customers with diabetes, Morton’s neuroma, bunions, wide feet…they love their new Lems wide toe box chelsea boots. If you’re not into the barefoot feel and need more arch support, just add your favorite to the Lems Chelsea boot and voila! you’re good to go. If you’re not quite a barefoot footwear girlie, add a pair of Bridge soles for extra support.

Sizes: 6-12 • Width: one width in Lems WIDEST Natural-Shape Fit • Price: $165 from Lems Shoes

7. Duckfeet Roskilde Chelsea Boot

Duckfeet footwear is handcrafted in Europe utilizing responsibly manufactured terracare® leather. A foot-shaped toe box accommodates a wider and higher forefoot due to genetics, bunions, hammertoes (hence the name “Duckfeet”).

“Duckfeet have a neutral leather footbed without any inherent arch support. Because it’s leather, the footbed will form to the wearer’s footprint over time. If support is desired, the footbed is great for accommodating most insoles as there is no built in support to compete with an insert/insole.” Duckfeet website

You can add a Duckfeet cork or wool insole to the Roskilde boot for a little more support or warmth.

Sizes: Mens and Womens Euro 35-48 (5-14) • Width: one width that fits medium to wide feet • Price: $268 from Duckfeet USA. Use code BARKINGDOG for 10% off your purchase.

What to wear when the forecast is calling for more gray, rain, cold, and you’re sick of wearing your snow boots? How about this cute boot by Blondo– a Canadian brand known for their waterproof but yet stylish footwear. I’ve wanted to try the Blondo brand for a while now, but this boot in particular caught my eye because of its gray on gray monochrome look that’s so in right now. I thought it would go with everything that I own from jeans to pants to skirts.

The Blondo Prestley is made of lovely leather that’s very soft to the touch. The back is made of a textile that matches the front to keep the monochrome look, but it has some stretch to it! This is beneficial if you have a larger calf and you hate boots that constrict the lower part of your leg.

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).

The toe area is definitely rounded. If you are into the pointy toe boot look, these are not for you. But if you have compromised joints, or you have bunions or hammer toes, you’ll probably find these pretty comfortable. I sure do, and I have all of that and more due to rheumatoid arthritis.

I find that the heel area is also a bit generous. That’s why I wear my socks with these just to get a more secure fit. The Blondo Prestly has a cushioned footed but it’s not removable. Arch support is minimal to moderate. I would say on a scale of one to 10, with one being like a Steve Madden ballet flat and 10 being Birkenstock, these are about a five.

For those of you with hallux rigidus or hallux limitus, you should know that the forefoot sits on a 3/4″ platform of TPR (thermoplastic rubber)–it’s sturdy and thick, not bending too much.

Blondo Prestly

I find that the Blondo Prestly runs pretty true to size, if not just a little bit big. I tend to wear a size 10 medium and that’s what I ordered in these. I don’t plan on returning them for anything smaller because I want to wear them with socks.

Find the Blondo Prestly in 5 colors, sizes 6-11 for $79-149 from Zappos, Amazon, and Nordstrom.

Every few months, we investigate the best plantar fasciitis shoes for women–always keeping fashion in mind.  As we can’t road test all the shoes and since styles are ever-evolving, we look for footwear with multiple positive reviews from women with plantar fasciitis. All feature good arch support and cushioning, shock-absorbing outsoles, deeper heel cups and 2″ and under heels. We’ll mention whether the shoe has a removable insole to accommodate an orthotic. We enjoy sharing our findings with you and are always open to recommendations of your best shoes for plantar fasciitis!

Best slip-on sneaker: Vionic Kearny Platform Slip-on Sneaker

Vionic has been upping their style game lately with trendy platform sneakers that not only look cute, but treat the feet well too (and the insole is removable)! Take it from these happy Vionic customers with plantar fasciitis:

Bought these shoes in black to wear to Ireland and Great Britain. They are so comfortable–no bunching of toes or slipping of heel. Hard to find a fashionable shoe in a wide size. I have plantar fasciitis and the arch support helps immensely.

The look and the fit is superb. It helps with my plantar fasciitis; the support is outstanding.

The Vionic Kearny Platform slip-on is available in sizes 5-13, medium and wide widths for $58-130 from Vionic ShoesZapposNordstrom and Amazon. Check out Vionic’s new arrivals for more stylish shoes for plantar fasciitis.

Naot Helm

Best ankle boot for plantar fasciitisNaot Helm

The minimalist Helm ankle boot (one of our favorite Naot styles) wins over women with problem feet. A removable anatomic cork and latex footbed and lightweight metal shank provide the support and stability that aching heels need. The Helm is part of Naot’s Aura collection of medium width footwear, yet the toe box is generous and forgiving of bunions. We love Christine’s review for Zappos:

These are unicorn shoes: comfort brand and finally a chic style that isn’t decidedly old-lady comfort granola. I am a devoted Naot lover with size 9.5-10 Wide feet with high high arches and plantar fasciitis, and the size 41 fit perfectly and is a snug, secure fit across the top of my foot.

Find the Naot Helm in euro sizes 35-42 (4-11) for $199.95 from Zappos, Naot.com and Nordstrom.

Tread Labs Salinas

Best sandal for Plantar Fasciitis:

A deep heel cup plus amazing arch support equals less strain on the fascia therefore alleviating plantar fasciitis pain. The Tread Labs Salinas is a new style for the brand and gaining fans quickly. Tamra R. says,

“These sandals are amazing! I bought them to vacation in FL…spent time at the beach, went kayaking, and walked ALL over Universal Studios, all while wearing these! My feet never felt tired and these are so easy to clean up. Buying a pair for my husband next!”

Available in whole sizes 6-11 for $130 from Tread Labs and Amazon.

Oofos OOlala sandal in Tiger Lily

Best flip-flop/slide for plantar fasciitis: Oofos

Oofos offer the trifecta of support, firm cushioning and fun summer style! Made with proprietary OOfoam® technology, OOFOS absorb 37% more impact than traditional foam footwear materials. The footbed cradles and supports the arches perfectly, in fact Oofos carry the prestigious APMA (American Podiatric Medial Association) seal of acceptance for promoting good foot health. Oofos customer Sheri loves her Oofos:

“My initial skepticism has now transformed into a 100% believer in these flip flop style sandals. Every time I wear them I am relieved of my plantar fasciitis heel pain. They support the entire foot and it feels like I’m walking on a cloud!”

Brooks Ghost

Best fitness shoes for plantar fasciitis: Brooks Ghost

With 77% of Zappos customers awarding a five-star rating to the Brooks Ghost running shoe, we had to find out why! We love Leslie’s review as it represents why so many women with PF love Brooks, especially the Ghost model:

This is the second pair of the Ghost line I have purchased and I honestly cannot believe they could get any better. Not only are they super comfortable but they are very cute. So far, I have run, completed 3 days of HIIT and 2 days of step aerobics. I bought a pair earlier this year after months of dealing with plantar fasciitis. Since the day I put them on, my plantar fasciitis has disappeared. I want to cry typing this. If you have ever dealt with PF you know how you would dread the first hour of your day. So grateful to be free of the pain. I am hooked on Brooks!!!

Aside from excellent heel support and pronation control, the Brooks Ghost features a roomy toe box and comes in narrow and wide widths. Find the Brooks Ghost in sizes 5-13, three widths for $129.95 from ZapposBrooks Running, and Amazon.

Dansko Paisley

Best waterproof sneaker for plantar fasciitisDansko Paisley

Are you planning a vacation to a wet climate where you’ll be walking miles every day? Don’t look like a tourist in day-glo running sneakers! Opt for the Dansko Paisley, a waterproof walking sneaker with a removable triple-density footbed with arch support and shock-absorbing, slip-resistant Vibram® rubber outsole.

Amazon customer Julie reviews her Paisleys:

“I’ve tried about everything know to mankind to alleviate my Achilles tendonitis and plantar fasciitis including about ten different inserts, 3D mapped inserts, compression wraps, chiropractic, PT, and medication. Nothing was helping, so I decided to buy these shoes in a last-ditch effort to avoid having laser surgery. They are an absolute miracle!! I can walk without limping, my feet aren’t screaming all day, my heels are no longer on fire, and I can stand for long periods of time without the excruciating pain I used to have. While I still have some slight pain in my heel, it’s tolerable now.”

The Dansko Paisley is available in euro sizes 36-42 (some colors available in sizes up to 43 and wide widths) for $144.95 from DanskoZappos, and Amazon.

Naot Innovate
Naot Innovate

Best dress sandal for plantar fasciitis: Naot Innovate

While we’d all love to be able to wear 3.5″ strappy sandals to a formal event and still be able to dance the night away, for most of us with compromised joints , painful toes and/or plantar fasciitis, those days are gone. The Naot Innovate heel comes in at just over two inches and features moderate arch support, and a metal shank for stability. Find the Naot Innovate in euro sizes 35-42 (4-11) for $179.95 from Zappos and Nordstrom.

Check out our reviews of Kuru shoes, known for their ability to relieve plantar fasciitis pain.

Budget-friendly tip: If you can’t afford a new pair of shoes for plantar fasciitis currently, try a pair of ProFoot heel cups–simply put them in your favorite pair of shoes for extra heel support (they carry the seal of acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association).

We’ve rounded up 9 comfortable chelsea boots for a variety of foot problems. Take a look!

As the colder months roll in, I’ve come to realize how essential it is to have a pair of winter slip-on booties that I can put on quickly while standing. I don’t want to sit on the floor or a bench and fuss with laces and buckles–a challenge for my arthritic fingers. Plus, a cozy pair of pull-on booties that provide enough space for swollen feet, allowing me to move without any painful pressure? Sounds heavenly.

With the right pair of winter slip-on booties, I can quickly head out for walks with my dog or make those last-minute trips to the store without worrying about discomfort or struggling to get my boots on. See my top picks for cozy, good-fitting slip-on boots for winter:

The North Face Thermoball Traction Bootie

I love Victoria’s Zappos review of TNF Thermoball bootie: “This is basically a snow slipper, a warm puffy little thing with enough of a sole and a bit of traction to get you through the conditions just outside your house, or your tent if you are winter camping.” Ok, there you have it, a snow slipper. There is no arch support, but you can add your own. Available in sizes 5-11 for $49-69 from Zappos and Amazon.

Dr. Scholl’s Time Off Yo booties

This is Dr. Scholl’s winter version of their popular Time Off sneaker. With a 2″ sport sole with 1 1/3″ platform, the Time Off Yo boot is as cute as it is functional. You’ll also find moderate arch support, dense cushioning and soft microfiber upper with faux shearling trim. Available in sizes 6-10, medium and wide widths for $39-80 from Dr. Scholl’s Shoes and Zappos.

Easy Spirit Trippin Cozy

These affordable slip-on booties by Easy Spirit have garnered stellar reviews for fit and feel. A happy Easy Spirit customers says this about her Trippin Cozy booties: “Hard time finding comfy books because of the arthritis in my feet. With these my feet just slip right in and sigh. Highly highly recommend!” Available in sizes 5-12, narrow to extra wide widths for $27-85 from Easy Spirit and Amazon.

8 Women's Winter Slip-On Booties for Arthritic Feet (and Hands)
8 Women’s Winter Slip-On Booties for Arthritic Feet (and Hands)

If you’ve experienced the pain-relieving comfort and support of Oofos sandals, you’ll want to take a look at the new Oomega Londoner boot with the same OOfoam™ Technology as the sandals. Reviews are coming in overwhelmingly positive. Find a pair in sizes 5-11 for $199.95 from Oofos.

Fitflop GEN-FF Padded Soft-Leather Booties

These pillowy luxury leather booties feature Fitflop’s famous Microwobbleboard midsole–a triple-density midsole that follows the three footstep stages (firm heel/soft middle/medium at toes). Available in sizes 5-11 for $114 from Fitflop.com.

Earth Fleet

Although not quite a slip-on bootie, the Earth Fleet looks too comfortable to leave off the list. A wide square toe allows for thicker socks and a cork outsole provides good shock-absorption. Available in sizes 5-12 for $58-129 from Earth Shoes and Amazon.

Kizik Juno Mid boot

One of the original “hands-free” shoes, Kizik is at it again with the Juno Mid slip-on boot. Slip on these warm insulated boots with moderate arch support and rugged traction–hands free! Word has it they run a little snug, so order up. Available in sizes 6-11 for $149 from Kizik.

Chaco Ramble Rugged

I love my Chaco Ramble Puffs, but it looks like they’re phasing out to make room for the newest addition of the Ramble collection. The Chaco Ramble Rugged features a thick water-resistant canvas upper with the same warm foot-soothing fleece lining and supportive Chaco insole (which isn’t removable, so order up if you plan to wear with orthotics). Available in whole sizes 5-12 for $59-85 from Chacos.com.

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).

Blondo Prestly

I find that the Blondo Prestly runs pretty true to size, if not just a little bit big. I tend to wear a size 10 medium and that’s what I ordered in these. I don’t plan on returning them for anything smaller because I want to wear them with socks.

Find the Blondo Prestly in 5 colors, sizes 6-11 for $79-149 from ZapposAmazon, and Nordstrom.

during the fall the local Aldi store had short rubber boots. my difficult feet immediately agreed, that these were going to be my favorites for winter. First pair in my size 9 was black. The next week they also had a faint salmon tone and off-white. I got the salmon. Have worn them most every day out in the woods with the dog. Very comfy and sturdy around the lower leg. I think I paid 20 bucks a pair.

Ingrid, that’s awesome. I’m a huge fan of Aldi, but never thought to try their boots!

Kuru Quest hiking boots

This review of the Kuru Quest hiking boots is sponsored by Kuru Footwear. The opinions are completely my own based on experience.

The Kuru Quest came my way not a day too late as my feet have been begging for a supportive pair of hikers. We recently relocated to Indiana and are fortunate to live across from the White River and miles of wooded nature trails. With my chronic toe woes and aching arches, longer walks really get the dogs barking, if you know what I mean.

Kirsten wears the Kuru Quest hiking boots

Heel cushioning: Kuru footwear features the patented KURUSOLE which is designed to hug and cushion the fat pad of the heel, relieving plantar fasciitis pain. While I’m not currently dealing with plantar fasciitis, my heels are sensitive to hard surfaces. The KURUSOLE keeps my heel in a secure position while providing excellent cushioning. How best to describe? It’s like an enclosed tiny trampoline for the heels that never hits bottom. Read more about the innovative KURUSOLE here.

Arch support: I find the Kuru removable insole to offer good arch support which is just as essential as heel cushioning in relieving plantar fasciitis pain as it eases strain on the fascia. For me, good arch support alleviates mid-foot arthritis pain and keeps my feet, ankles and even knees aligned.

Kuru Quest hiking boots

Toe box: My favorite feature of my Kuru Quest boots is the wide, squarish toe box. With bunions and painful tailor’s bunions (due to arthritic changes in my feet over the years), it’s challenging to find a shoe with a toe box that accommodates both. I need a toe box that stays wide all the way to my mid-foot and doesn’t taper too soon–does that make sense? The Kuru Quest offers ample room for my wonky toes (even with socks) allowing me to cover more distance on the trails in comfort.

KURUSOLE technology
Kuru Quest hiking boots

Overall feel and fit of the Kuru Quest: My feet feel supported and secure without pinching or irritation. At first the leather felt a little stiff, but with each wearing, it softens up more. The fit at the ankle is a little loose, but I have slim lower leg/ankle area. In my opinion, the Kuru Quest runs true to size.

Bonus feature: Not only is the ankle cuff area cushioned, the material has a subtle sparkle to it which is hard to pick up in photos. I really like it because it adds a little girly bling to a functional hiking boot (so do the light blue laces).

The Kuru Quest boot is available in whole and half sizes 6-12 for $175 from Kuru Footwear with free shipping and free returns within 45 days (in original condition). If you’re looking for a supportive hiking shoe, take a look at the Kuru Chicane.

How about you? Do you have a pair of Kuru shoes? What are your thoughts about fit and feel? Leave a comment and let us know!

Taos Mini Crave

2024 update! The Taos Crave comes in a mini version (meaning true ankle boot height).

Isn’t she cute??

Taos Crave

This review of the Taos Crave boot is sponsored by TaosFootwear.com. The opinions are completely my own based on experience.

This is the boot that all the other boots envy: gorgeous on the outside, yet supportive and gentle on the inside; dependable, tough and incredibly versatile. That’s the Taos Crave boot.

Taos Crave in Ink Blue

Taos calls the Crave an “urban” boot–but my SUV-driving, Target-shopping suburban feet crave the comfort of this boot every bit as much as urban feet. Tonight I took them for a spin around our neighborhood as my youngest went trick-or-treating. First off, I love a lace-up boot with a side zipper. Who’s got time to tie their boots every time they leave the house? Adjust the laces once and be done with it!

Taos Crave

Once the Crave was laced-up, zipped and ready to go, the second thing I noted was the toe room. Since I’m the lucky recipient of both bunions and hammertoes, I detect immediately if a toe box is too narrow or shallow. While the Taos Crave’s toe box isn’t as wide as what you’d find in a Dansko Professional, my toes didn’t feel cramped. However, I will stick to a thinner sock until the leather stretches out over time. While on the topic of toe room, you should know that I ordered a euro size 41 for my size 10 feet (occasionally I’m a 9.5). I’m happy with the snug fit, but if you have significant bunions, wider feet or plan on wearing the boot with thick socks, I’d order up a size.

Arch support, sweet arch support–the Crave boot has just the right amount for my medium arches. But if you need more, just remove the footbed and insert your favorite insole or orthotic (you could try a Tread-Labs 3/4 orthotic if you’re concerned about crowding the toe box). The dual-density cushioned insole adds to the overall comfort of this stunning boot.

Another feature I noted as I walked the neighborhood is the 2″ heel height. This is just slightly higher than most casual shoes and boots I wear. Thankfully the 3/4″ platform offset the total elevation from toe to heel. I think this would be beneficial for someone with plantar fasciitis or achilles tendonitis who needs a little lift to alleviate discomfort. The rugged rubber outsole offers excellent shock-absorption and traction.

Do you live in a climate with temperate winters around 40 degrees? This boot may be the only winter boot you need. It has a soft faux-fur lining that keeps toes cozy and warm. Truly the designers of this stunning boot thought of everything–just look at the distressed leather and soft suede uppers in rich fall hues from ink blue (pictured here) to bordeaux to teal. The attention to detail is noteworthy: cap-toe stitching, buckle embellishment, and metal eyelets.

Taos Crave

The Taos Crave boot is available in euro sizes 36-43, medium and wide widths from TaosFootwear.com (as noted above, you may want to order up a size if you have a wide foot, significant bunions, or plan to use an orthotic). Also available from Zappos and Amazon.
