Respected podiatrist and foot/ankle specialist Dr. Tom Biernacki explains the condition well over at his wonderful YouTube channel. He states, “A shoe can make all the difference in the world.” When it comes to the best shoes for hallux rigidus he recommends footwear with a stiff heel, stiff midsole and a non-flexible forefoot.

Keeping Dr. Biernacki’s wisdom in mind, I’ve tried my best to round up the most comfortable (and stylish as possible) women’s shoes for hallux rigidus. Yours truly had a cheilectomy on my right big toe last summer due to hallux rigidus caused by rheumatoid arthritis, so I have first-foot experience with a few of these. Even if you have turf toe (a sprain or injury to the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint of the big toe), you’ll find these women’s shoe recommendations helpful!

Athletic Shoes

My personal favorite fitness shoe is the Topo Athletic Atmos (or any of their styles with a thicker sole). I love this brand so much. The toe box is wide, the arch support is perfect (so is the cushioning), and the fit at the heel is snug–plus a rocker sole! I wore them pre-cheilectomy and post-cheilectomy. You can watch my video review to find out more about the Atmos style. I also wear the Magnifly model for every day walks and fitness classes (Zumba and Les Mills Body Pump at the Y).

Hoka fitness shoes: Hoka shoes (specifically the Bondi style) are one of the best running shoes for hallux rigidus on the market. Find the most current Hoka Bondi 9 in a variety of neutrals and brights.

If your hallux rigidus is severe, consider the Hoka Skyward with a carbon fiber plate that stiffens the forefoot area of the shoe preventing it from bending and protecting the big toe joint.

Fitflop has diversified their footwear collection to the point it’s hard to know which footbed you’re getting. Good news! A generous toe box and sturdy yet lightweight flatform keep sensitive toes happy.

We love the new Chelsea boot style of popular Ariat Fatbaby boot! A generous toe box, moderate arch support and thick outsole make this cute boot a excellent choice for hallux rigidus. I love these shoes. I own a pair and recommend them to everyone that suffers from plantar fasciitis to bunions to hallux rigidus. (see my Youtube review). The footbed is contoured to support arches, heel and metatarsals. The sole is thick and doesn’t overly bend (the name of the shoe is a misnomer), protecting the forefoot. The toe box is generous and foot-shaped. A+. Available in euro sizes 36-41 (6-10.5–I take a 41 for my size 10 feet) for $140-150 from Birkenstock, Nordstrom, Zappos and Amazon.

Recommended by members of the Hallux Rigidus Support Group, the Aerosoles Cosmos (and similar platform heel iterations) could be the golden ticket for getting through a special occasion without wincing in pain all night. The 3″ stable block heel and 1.25″ platform work together elevate the foot without the drastic toe to heel angle. An Ortholite footbed provides good cushioning to sensitive feet. Thank you, Abeo, for giving us a comfortable dress sandal with a modest 2″ block heel that looks modern (dare I say svelte?). I’m always pleasantly surprised when I find a dressy shoe that works with my lousy feet. We’ve had three weddings to attend this summer so I needed something a little more glam than metallic Birks! Heeding a recommendation from my own Facebook group, I swiped up a pair of Kenneth Cole Reeva platform sandals from Amazon.

When they showed up the next day in all their gold metallic festiveness, I crossed my fingers and toes and thought, “Here goes nothing.” I had already tried the Aerosoles Cosmos (a similar block heel platform sandal) and had to send them back due to a disappointing fit across the forefoot (I have bunions, tailor’s bunions and hammertoes–a hellish trifecta).

I reluctantly buckled up the Kenneth Cole Reevas and took them for a test walk. Gingerly walking down the hall at first, I picked up my pace with confidence as I realized these might actually work if not for all-day wear, at least for a 4 hour wedding and reception.

And I was right. My new Kenneth Cole sandals provided just enough height without the staggering toe to heel pitch of a standard high heel, thanks to the one inch platform. My feet and ankles felt secure and stable.

The strap placement covered my bunion and allowed a space for my tailor’s bunion without irritation–this was key for keeping them! I’ll be honest, by the end of the evening, I was ready to kick them off, but I made it through the ceremony and reception without changing into flats!

We all know how difficult it is to find a ballet flat with good arch support, let alone the capacity to accommodate bunions and hammertoes, but the Nairobi does all that and more with style and grace! Sandals are ok, but I’m usually trying to cover up a side bunion on the other foot. Platform sandals might be OK if the heel height isn’t much higher than the toes which isn’t more than 1/2″. Do you have any ideas?

Hallux Rigidus (big toe stiffness and pain) only worsens with flexible forefoot shoes, as you know. I’d like to tell you to stay in closed-toe footwear with a special insole to limit the motion of the big toe joint, but you’re asking me for sandal recommendations. I completely understand–just because you have a bum big toe, doesn’t mean you’ve given up on stylish, season-appropriate footwear. Let me recommend sandals with a sturdy forefoot, good support and straps that will cover your bunion (see the last pick for an orthotic-friendly choice).

The Amadour sandal by L’Amour des Pieds (the love of feet), will keep that pesky big toe joint stable while taking care of other foot issues like plantar fasciitis and bunions (soft forefoot strap covers them without irritation). While I do think a trip to the orthopedic doc is wise, I am in the process of reading through the comments and trying a few of the footwear recommendations. I’ve picked my favorite six to feature here on the blog.

Can you believe I was going to give these away? I rescued them from my “Going to Goodwill” bag and wore them for a long day of outlet shopping. Heavenly. Not only does the toe box offer ample room, the arch support takes some of the weight off the side of the foot with the tailor’s bunion. Unfortunately the Chaco Pineland moc is a discontinued style, so grab a pair quickly for $69-130 from Amazon.

Recommended by a reader with bunions and hammertoes–Arcopedico booties. The L8 style pictured here features a breathable Lytech stretch fabric upper that accommodates bunions, tailor’s bunions and hammertoes. Moderate arch support and a heel cup helps to align the foot. Find Arcopedico boots in euro sizes 35-43 (4.5-12) for $124-159 from Zappos, and Amazon.

Closed-toe Birkenstocks. I’m a personal fan of the Birkenstock Boston (it’s the only closed-toe Birk I own), but the Gary oxford gets high marks for comfortable, supportive footbed and soft, accommodating uppers (especially the suede). The Gary comes in a lovely navy suede from Zappos and Birkenstock.com for $139.95. Other recommended closed-toe Birks: the adorable Bakki boot with shearling lining, and the Birkenstock London with suede uppers.

For a dressier option with a 2.5″ wedge heel, consider the Aetrex Mia. When customers say this shoe has a wide toe box, they mean it! Also included: a lightweight yet supportive cork midsole, memory foam-covered insole, metatarsal support and adjustable instep strap. Altra DyaniQuite a few responders to the Facebook discussion mentioned Altra shoes for tailor’s bunions. The foot-shaped toe box accommodates bunions and bunionettes and even allows for use of Correct Toes or other toe spacers to maintain alignment of toes. One of our readers mentioned Allbirds wool runners. The soft merino wool uppers feel heavenly against sore toes. While they don’t offer the best arch support, you can swap out their thin insole for something more substantial.
