No matter the season, bunions refuse to conform to ill-fitting footwear. No worries, we’ve got you (and your bunion) covered! See six of our favorite sandals for bunions. All feature soft leather uppers, vamps that don’t cross the bunion area and other comfort features to carry you through the day painlessly. Then hop down to the bottom of the article to see 21 more brands and styles recommended by our Facebook community. Feel free to leave a comment with your favorite shoes or sandals for bunions that have helped you.

STYLISH SANDALS FOR BUNIONS

Dansko Dayna

“I have a bunion and whenever I purchase shoes, they have to feel good and not bother my bunion. These are great. The strap on the inside part of my foot hides the bunion, but, more important the strap does not bother the bunion.”

If you’ve tried Birkenstock but for some reason or another the fit and feel isn’t for you, give the Dansko Dayna a try. Not only is the footbed soft and supportive, the straps work in your favor according to Dansko customer Connie:

Find the Dansko Dayna in euro sizes 36-42 (5.5-11.5) for $140 from Dansko, Zappos and Amazon.

Birkenstock Arizona EVA

For under $50, the Birkenstock Arizona EVA supports the arches, conceals the bunions and tidies up well! EVA refers to the material used (ethylene vinyl acetate)– a high-quality, lightweight, elastic material with very good cushioning. As a result, it smooths out slight irregularities in the floor and ensures that every step is softly cushioned. I have a pair and find the support not quite as enhanced as my regular cork/latex Birkenstocks, but better than Crocs! And they come in such pretty colors now. Find a pair in women’s sizes 5-12 (men’s 6-13), narrow and regular widths for $49.95 from Birkenstock, Zappos and Amazon.

Naot Throne

“Absolutely beautiful sandal, with soft, bunion-friendly leather! This shoe is a true narrow width; I would not recommend them to a person with a wide foot. For reference, I wear an 8N in flats, and I purchased a size 38, which is what I usually wear in Naot sandals.” – Zappos customer

Do you have a narrow to medium width foot with bunions? The lovely Naot Throne features soft leather criss-cross straps that won’t irritate that area of your foot along with good arch support. A 1 3/4″ wedge elevates the heel a little which is good for plantar fasciitis. Available in euro sizes 35-42 (4.5-11) for $168 from Naot, Zappos and Nordstrom.

Taos Gift 2

The Taos Gift 2 sandal is the trifecta of arch support, metatarsal support and bunion concealment! It’s been around for years and we hope Taos keeps it for years to come. This is just one of hundreds of 5 star Zappos reviews for the Gift 2:

“This is my third pair of these sandals. I have a hard time finding comfortable (and reasonably attractive) sandals due to a significant bunion on my left foot. These are soft and accommodating, not to mention effectively hiding the embarrassing bunion. They look nice and come in several different colors. They hold up well. True to size.”

Find the Taos Gift 2 in sizes 6-12 for $135 from Taos Footwear, Zappos, and Amazon.

Baretraps Denni

“These shoes are great. I have horrible feet – bunions, flat feet, arthritis, hammer toes, etc. These shoes work great for my feet. Good arch support, cushion is wonderful and the strap hides the bunions without hurting or rubbing.” – Amazon customer

An affordable sandal for bunions, the Baretraps Denni supports the arches and cushions the soles. A soft manmade upper covers bunions without irritating them. Available in sizes 6-11, medium and wide widths for $49-59 from Amazon and Nordstrom Rack.

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
Halsa Denia

“The first time I wore these, I walked all over a mall for two hours and they were very comfortable. No issues, no blisters, no pain. They are fashionable but also perfectly cover my bunion, which is rare for a sandal. I also wore these on vacation and walked a LOT without an issue. They felt true to size (I had the 8 wide). Totally love these, and since it’s very hard to find wide summer shoes that cover my bunions, it’s worth the price.” – Zappos customer

If bunions are just one of your many foot maladies, consider the Halsa Denia sandal. The adjustable leather straps conceal the bunions (and bunionettes) while the orthotic-style footbed supports the arches and cushions the heel.

Find the Halsa Denia in sizes 6-11, medium and wide width for $99-124.95 from and Nordstrom and Amazon.

Other bunion-friendly sandals that deserve mention: Orthofeet Lyra (stretch-knit, wide widths), Alegria Valerie (a tie-up sandal with enclosed heel–could fit orthotic), Skechers Arch Fit City sandals (stretch-knit, good support and affordable).

My Kuru Stride slip-on sneakers sit on a shoe rack by the garage door waiting to go on a nightly after-supper dog walk. In the summertime, I have no patience for lace-ups. Sure, my Topo Athletic shoes are still my go-to for workouts, but the Kuru Stride remains my bestie for summertime dog walks.

I love the easy-breezy feeling of the Kuru Stride and how it accommodates my pesky forefoot (bunions and hammertoes due to RA) and high instep. The unique “Novaknit” upper is soft, seamless and slightly stretchy which makes it oh-so easy to wear. There’s an ingenious layer of microsuede on the inside of the top of the toe portion (and heel) which makes the upper even softer on toe bumps.

The Novaknit upper is perfect for covering up the toes while still keeping the feet cool on hot summer days–it’s breathable and lightweight (and while machine-washing the Strides may not be recommended by the company, I’ve done it twice and they turn out just fine–just remove the insoles and don’t put in the dryer).

While the toe box isn’t exactly wide, the slight stretch of the Novaknit material means it can accommodate a slightly wider forefoot. The fit through the mid-foot to heel narrows providing a secure feel through the stride.

The cushioned footbed is removable and may allow for a thinner orthotic if needed for custom support. The built-in arch support isn’t quite as aggressive as Vionic, but supports my medium-high arches well. Read more about Kuru’s comfort technologies here.

I recommend the Kuru Stride for slightly narrow-slightly wide feet that need moderate arch support and seamless upper whether to reduce irritation due to bunions, hammertoes, neuroma or neuropathy. Find the Kuru Stride in nine colors, sizes 5-12 (fit is true), medium and wide widths for $100-135 from KuruFootwear.com.

Joanne, a loyal Barking Dog Shoes fan, kindly submitted a review for her favorite Ecco Booties, the Soft 7. We think you’ll appreciate her detailed observations.

Ecco Soft 7 booties

I went to The Walking Company to get one or two new fall shoes and the woman helping me was wearing the Ecco booties pictured above (Ecco Soft 7 bootie) in bordeaux suede. I noticed them right away – they are so cute! She told me they had taken her some time to break in but were very comfortable. So of course I tried them on right away.

I normally take a 7 (sometimes a 7-1/2) in a closed toe shoe and tried on the Ecco in size 38, which was perfect. I tried both the black and bordeaux cow nubuck but that burgundy color, which happens to be my favorite, was irresistible. It really shows off the cute side zip and the little gold tag at the back. It also is a darker shade of plum, more purple than red. It goes with all the plum and burgundy clothes that are in the stores right now.

The fit is relaxed but supportive. The toe box is plenty roomy, which makes my moderate bunions and one hammertoe very happy. The bootie material is a soft almost suede-like nubuck. Which means my hammertoe, which barely grazes the top of the shoes, is not squeezed or rubbed. The heel does not slip so they appear to be perfect for my duck feet. The insole is removable but there is plenty of good padding so I felt no need to pop in custom orthotics. The side zipper makes it very easy to get them on and off.

Ecco Soft 7 Booties

They are very light on my feet and easy to wear. I have worn them now two full days in a row with no break-in needed at all. No rubbing, no blisters and none of that cramping feeling I sometimes get with new closed toe shoes.

I have been wearing the Eccos with Smartwool no show socks and they are the perfect pair for these booties.

Best of all they are so stinking cute! They look great paired with leggings, skinny pants or ankle pants. I plan to use these as my airplane shoes since they are roomy enough that any in flight swelling will not cause any discomfort. My bottom line – I love them!

Ecco Soft 7 low booties are available in euro sizes 35-43 (4-12), eight colors for $113-170 from Zappos, Amazon and Nordstrom.

Stegmann Original 108 clogs (left) and Stegmann Graz Suede clog (right)

This review of Stegmann clogs is provided by Stegmann USA. The opinions are completely our own based on experience.

Have you heard of Stegmann clogs? If you like Haflinger and Birkenstock, you’ll love Stegmann. In fact, back when my RA was at its worst, Stegmann clogs came to the rescue. I’ll never forget my first pair of black merino wool 108s. They were versatile double-duty shoes that supported and comforted my aching feet at home as well as at work as a junior high teacher. I lost track of the brand over the years but am so happy to rediscover it and share my Stegmann love with you, Barking Dog readers.

Stegmann Original 108 Wool Clogs with signature “S” ribbon detail

As the weather cools off here in Chicagoland, my floors do too. I keep my Stegmann clogs by the back door waiting for me like faithful dogs. I kick off my street shoes, slip on my 108s and sigh with relief. The winning combo of soft, non-irritating uppers and enhanced support (for both longitudinal arch and metatarsal arches) feels heavenly on tired, aching feet at the end of the day. Since Stegmann clogs feature a textured EVA outsole, I’m not obligated to leave them at the door! I can run errands, take the garbage out and walk the dog in supreme comfort.

Stegmann Graz Clog in suede

Let’s talk footbeds for a minute. I’m a sucker for a good anatomical cork and latex footbed–and Stegmann Originals have it. It provides the firm support that my wonky foot joints need.  I have medium to high arches (one is lower due to a talo-navicular fusion after RA did a number on my mid-foot joints). Stegmann’s firm, medium-high arch support is a perfect fit for my feet–keeps my feet and ankles from rolling in (over-pronation).

Stegmann Graz Clogs in suede (with Mr. Cuddles)

What I love most about my Stegmann clogs is the metatarsal pad. I’m used to the metatarsal support that my Birkenstocks offer, but this is more noticeable. Because I have hammertoes that result in metatarsal pain, the added support brings relief. For anyone that suffers from metatarsalgia, sesamoiditis or Morton’s neuroma, I’d recommend Stegmann. Other awesome features: wide toe box (accommodating of bunions), deep heel cup (keeps foot settled in shoe, promotes alignment), 1” heel rise with ¾ inch toe platform (gentle slope aids in reducing ankle and back pain). I even think the Stegmann clogs with the cork and latex sole will work for those with hallux rigidus–not overly flexible at the big toe joint.

Stegmann clogs are hand-felted on wooden shoe lasts.

I just found out that Stegmann footwear is hand-crafted in Austria (wool upper), Germany (footbed) and Missouri (assembly), not outsourced to China like some other comfort shoe brands. Each wool upper is hand-felted on a “shoe last,” which is basically a “wooden foot shape.” Much of this wool is sourced locally in the Tyrolian Alps and is part of Stegmann’s Species Preservation initiative to support small farmers and sustain rare breeds of sheep. Isn’t that fascinating?

Other welcome features? Plenty of room in the toe box (a plus for anyone with bunions or a wider forefoot), and soft leather that conforms to your foot with wear. The metatarsal bar (raised part of the shoe under the forefoot) felt strange at first, but I found after a few minutes I didn’t notice it as much. And after a longer period of wear, I realized I had none of the ball-of-foot discomfort I often experience due to my bunion. I don’t know how a metatarsal bar works, but it definitely does!  The arch support is moderate – not as aggressive as a Birkenstock, but definitely still there.

Stegmann Liesl Skimmer. Available here.

• Stegmann Original wool clog sizes: 5.5-12 • Width: Generous M • Price: $155 from Stegmann USA • Men’s clogs available here

Have you ever worn Stegmann clogs? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Dansko Lexie

So simple, so classic, so comfortable. The Dansko Lexie mule is the shoe I didn’t know I needed until I bought it on a whim. I’m currently employed as a part-time high school Spanish teacher in the Indy area, but my feet and knees don’t understand part-time–they’re full-time complaining lately. My knees have never been an issue, even with RA, but a recent meniscus tear means even a slight heel causes intense pain. While I wait for the doctor to get back with me for treatment options, I’m sticking to these mules for work (along with my Birkenstock Buckleys).

The soft leather uppers conform to bunions and hammertoes and while the toe box is narrower than traditional Dansko clogs, it doesn’t squeeze my forefoot (I’m a true medium width with wider forefoot). The arch support is surprisingly noticeable for a low profile mule. The footbed is removable but I don’t think it would accommodate an orthotic well.

Dansko Lexie

The insole is nicely cushioned and the outsole fairly flat (1/2″ heel) and flexible. Lately I’ve found that more flexible footwear takes load off the knee therefore relieving pain (my Topo Athletic shoes have been a lifesaver as they’ve allowed me to continue to walk for exercise).

I love the Moroccan green color–it’s subtle yet adds interest to many outfits.

I ordered the Dansko Lexie in my usual euro size 41 which best fits my size 10 medium foot. I don’t find the Lexie to slip off my foot, mainly due to my high instep. But if you have a narrow foot or low instep, you may have this problem.

Find the Dansko Lexie in euro sizes 36-41 for $59-129.95 from Dansko.com, and Amazon. Do you have a favorite Dansko style? Leave us a comment or join our Facebook community where we talk all things comfortables shoes!

In this video, I review Earth’s new Rellia block heel pump. The rich-hued merlot suede caught my attention as its the perfect shade for autumn outfits. The two-inch heel is manageable and insole cushioning is superb. My only caveat is the toe box, but that’s my foot’s problem, not the shoe per se. I have a wide forefoot due to bunions (and tailor’s bunions) caused by rheumatoid arthritis, so the toe box does feel tight.

Can I wear the Earth Rellia for short stints? Sure. Could you wear it for longer? Probably. Watch the video to get a better idea of fit and feel.

The Earth Rellia pump comes in six colors, whole and half sizes 5-11, 12, medium and wide widths for $65-109 from EarthShoes.com and Amazon.

If you’re looking for a more casual option from Earth shoes, take a look at a few of my favorites.

Earth Lindy

The Earth Lindy features a chunky 1 3/4″ heel for just the right amount of lift. A cushioned insole and round toe box ensure all-day comfort. Available in sizes 5-12 for $47-119 from Earth Shoes and Amazon.

Earth Maren

We love the color combinations on these fun Earth Shoes sneakers! 100% of the components are made with partially recycled materials. The Maren sneaker features a removable footbed with moderate arch support, round toe, padded collar and tongue. Available in sizes 5-12 for $50-129 from EarthShoes.comNordstrom and Amazon.

Earth Ezra

The Earth Ezra clog is a perfect combo of cushioned comfort and structured support. Wear it as a shoe or slipper! Available in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $55-89 from EarthShoes.com and Amazon.

Was I hiding under a rock this summer? These adorable Ilse Jacobsen Tulip slip-ons have over 200 customer reviews at Nordstrom, mostly five star…and I’m just now noticing them?  How about you? Have you seen these? Do you have a pair? If not, let’s find out why they’re featured here on the leading blog for comfortable shoes.

Process of elimination: if you need enhanced arch support, read no further–these are not your shoes. If what your feet crave is a pillowy insole with soft non-irritating uppers, read on.

The perforated uppers are made of recycled microfiber and glide smoothly over bunions and hammertoes. Ali, a Zappos customer raves about her new comfortable shoes:

“Ladies with bunions and arthritic big toes, relief is finally here! I have found it more and more difficult to fit into fashionable shoes comfortably, and these shoes were the answer to my prayers!”

The leather-lined removable insole sits atop a thick rubber outsole. This combo provides a “walking on clouds” type experience. Some customers use the Tulip as a travel shoe since it’s lightweight, packs easily, is breathable and provides superior cushioning and traction. Plus, I’ve read that they’re washable too!

Now in leopard!

A word in sizing: most customers find the Tulip to run small. We recommend ordering up a size. If the shoe still feels a bit tight, realize it will stretch with wear.

I’m in the market for a closed-toe pump for back-to-school time. Yep, that’s right. I’m going back to school–as a part-time Spanish teacher at a local high school. I’m excited! It’s been thirteen years since I’ve had a class of my own, so I’m reevaluating my wardrobe, including my collection of footwear. Yes, I have plenty of sandals, sneakers and ankle boots, but I’m missing that one pair of perfect teacher shoes–professional, comfortable yet with unique styling. The Rieker Sina 78 fills that gap in my wardrobe.

The first thing I notice when slipping my feet into the Rieker Sina 78 is the glove-like fit. My toes spread out comfortably thanks to the slight stretchiness of the soft woven upper, yet the shoe hugs the back of my heel (there’s elastic goring in the back strap): a great option for those with wide forefoot/narrow heel combination, or for feet that swell during the day.  Fortunately, the Rieker Sina’s woven upper allows feet to breathe while still providing toe coverage. Win win.

The 1.5″ architectural heel  is perfect–just enough lift without the uncomfortable pressure on forefoot and knees. The footbed is lightly cushioned and flexible. If you’re used to layers of memory foam cushioning or a thick outsole, this is not the shoe for you (especially if you have painful hallux rigidus, the forefoot is too flexible). There is definiately a “one-with-the-ground” feel to the Rieker Sina 78 so I might add a ball-of-foot cushion.

Don’t worry about slipping on smooth floors, the Rieker Sina 78 has a nicely textured polyurethane outsole that grips slippery flooring well.

If you have a high volume foot as I do, you may be wondering if the scalloped topline irritates the top of the foot. I haven’t found this to be true. The leather is buttery soft and doesn’t dig into the feet. I imagine that even low volume feet would get a secure fit in this shoe.

As far as fit, I usually wear a 10 and fine the euro 41 to fit me perfectly (although Zappos suggests a 42 for size 10, which would have been too big). Find the Rieker Sina 78 in euro sizes 36-42 for $125 from Amazon and Zappos.

See our Facebook discussion of this shoe and feel free to ask a question before ordering.

Say goodbye to hiding your feet in closed shoes this summer. See our curated collection of bunion-concealing sandals so you can flaunt your footwear with confidence! After all, who wants their bunions to steal the spotlight?

Forefoot strap placement is crucial for bunion sufferers, and we’ve kept that in mind. Wide straps or criss-cross designs in soft leathers and fabrics ensure maximum comfort without sacrificing style. No more worrying about irritating or aggravating those painful bunions – these sandals have got you covered. Let’s get started!

BarkingDogShoes.com is reader supported. When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you.

Sofft Fallon

The Sofft Fallon sandal boasts a forefoot strap placement that prioritizes comfort, making it an ideal choice for those with bunions or sensitive feet. The wide straps, crafted from soft leathers and fabrics, gently cradle your foot without causing irritation or discomfort. Find it in sizes 6-11 for $119.95 from Zappos, Amazon and Nordstrom.

Vionic Awaken Recovery Sandal

Yes, it’s basic. But if you’re recovering from foot surgery as I am ((cheilectomy and bunionette removal) you’re just thrilled to be in anything other than a black surgical shoe. The new Vionic Awaken sandal features enhanced arch support on a massaging footbed and a wide adjustable leather forefoot strap that covers the bunions, bunionettes and/or any surgery scars. Find it in sizes 5-13, medium and wide widths for $90-125 from VionicShoes.com, Nordstrom and Zappos.

Taos Gift 2

I’m thankful Taos keeps this sandal around season after season. It’s got a good thing going with its soft bunion-concealing upper and anatomical footbed with enhanced arch and metatarsal support. The Taos Gift 2 comes in sizes 6-12 for $135 from TaosFootwear.com, Zappos and Amazon.

Linea Paolo Raylin

This footbed sandal by Linea Paolo conceals bunions while maintaining a chic and contemporary silhouette. Find the LP Raylin in sizes 5-11 for $109.95 from Nordstrom and Amazon.

Minnetonka Posey

We love this summer-ready platform slide by Minnetonka. The soft fabric straps and foam footbed provide all-day comfort for aching feet. Find the Posey platform sandal in whole sizes 6-11 for $69.95 from Nordstrom and Amazon.

Ugg Goldenstar

Surely these aren’t for everyone, but thankfully chunky platform sandals are on trend right now. I wear a size 10 and these do look a bit like clodhoppers on my feet (I tried them on but sent them back). However, on the right feet they look downright cute. The adjustable wide straps cover the bunions while the footbed supports the arches. Find the Ugg Goldenstar in sizes 5-12 for $120 from Ugg, Zappos and Nordstrom.

Earth Hilda

If slides aren’t your style or you prefer a real buckle to velcro, this platform espadrille sandal is for you. The Earth Hilda features premium leather criss-cross straps, plush insole, 2″ heel with a 1.5″ platform. Find it in sizes 5-12 for $49-99 from EarthShoes.com and Nordstrom.

Birkenstock Oita

The Birkenstock Oita is my personal favorite because I rarely wear a different brand in the summertime–Birkenstock support is unparalleled. I love the Oita because the thick adjustable straps cover not only my bunions, but tailor’s bunions too. See my video review here. Find the Oita in euro sizes 35-42 (4-12.5) for $120 from Nordstrom.

Munro Lee

Do you have an occasion coming up and you’re perplexed about how to conceal the bunions? The Munro Lee in metallic silver dresses up the feet while covering up imperfections. And it comes in four widths and extended sizes! Available for $195 from Nordstrom and Munro Shoes.

Spring Step Allerton

I have a similar wedge slide by OTBT that was discontinued sadly. It was the only heel I could wear without bunion pain. The Spring Step Allerton looks almost the same with its soft leather upper, cushioned footbed and sturdy wedge heel, plus it comes in beautiful colors and neutrals. Find it in sizes 5.5-11 for $99-119.95 from Nordstrom, Spring Step Shoes, and Amazon.
