Review of Vionic Uptown loafer

You can watch my YouTube video for an in depth review of the Vionic Uptown loafer. Or you can get the bulleted blow by blow below if you’re in a hurry. One thing is sure; I’m keeping these and foresee lots of wear this fall in classroom as I substitute teach at my son’s high school.

Update autumn 2025: I’m still reaching for my Vionic Uptowns whenever I need to cover my toes due to chipped pedicure and general distaste of my arthritic feet! The soft suede is kind to my sensitive toes and instep. The arch support is just right and they go with all my casual outfits.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • Toe box is generous but doesn’t look wide.
  • Softest suede or leather uppers are forgiving of bunions and hammertoes.
  • No irritating seams on the inside.
  • Enhanced arch support.
  • Good traction.
  • Flexible outsole.
  • True to size.
  • Extended sizes, wide widths available.

The incredible Birkenstock Bend sneaker is the magic bullet for alleviating discomfort from foot maladies such as plantar fasciitis, over-pronation, fallen arches, metatarsalgia, Morton’s neuroma, bunions, etc.

Watch my video review to find out more about the Birkenstock Bend and its comfort features. I call my Birkenstock Arizona sandals my “second feet” since they provide the support and comfort my troubled feet need–rheumatoid arthritis has done a number on my feet. So imagine my excitement to discover that Birkenstock makes a sneaker with the same contoured cork and latex footbed that I’ve come to know and love. Plus, the toe box is roomy and accommodates bunions, tailor’s bunions and other forefoot issues.

Birkenstock Bend

If you need to use a custom orthotic, the footbed in the Birkenstock Bend is removable and replaceable (but the footbed is so wonderfully supportive, you may not need your orthotics).

I wear a euro 41 for my size 10 feet and they fit like a dream (I also wear a narrow/medium width which fits like a true medium). The Birkenstock Bend is available in euro sizes 36-42 for $150 from Nordstrom, Zappos and Amazon.

Find a pair of Birkenstock Bend sneakers for a fraction of retail price from my curated collection on eBay!

Those of us in cooler climates look forward to sandal season all year long – that sometimes too-brief window of time when feet can be sock-free and open to the breeze.  But if you have feet that need extra support, we probably don’t have to tell you that finding sandals with arch support can be a challenge.  Join us as we round up a collection of great options to keep you looking good and feeling great all summer long.

You may notice many of our sandals with arch support have a back strap. This is intentional, as we recently learned from Dr. Cathleen McCarthy, a top podiatrist in Phoenix and author of Podiatry Shoe Review, that sandals with back straps are a must if you suffer from hammertoes or bunions. The rear foot control that a back strap provides discourages toe-gripping to keep the sandal on (this motion speeds up the progression of hammertoes…and bunions.)   Even if bunions and hammertoes aren’t an issue for your feet, you may still appreciate the security of a back strap, but we’ve also included some supportive slip-on options.

Dansko Season: APMA-approved sandal

Clogs are making yet another comeback for 2025 and I’m happy to see that Dansko has kept this cutie around for yet another “Season.” Two velcro straps allow for a customized fit (even though the ankle strap looks like a real buckle). If you struggle with arthritis of the big toe (hallux rigidus) or need a rocker sole shoe to take pressure off the forefoot, the Dansko Season is a great choice. Plus it offers excellent arch support and cushioning for the sole.

Sizes: euro 36-42 (5.5-12) • Width: M • Price: $61-130 from Dansko, Zappos & Amazon

Vionic Walk Max Wanderer

“Really surprised by these, they blow my Teva and Chaco sandals out of the water! I can’t wait to wear them all summer. Recommend sizing down a half size from your Vionic sneaker/boot size.” Vionic customer

Incorporating Vionic’s newest and most lightweight midsole (Super Critical Foam) infused with nitrogen, the Vionic Walk Max Wanderer offers enhanced arch support, deep hee cup and three padded, adjustable straps.

Sizes: 5-13 • Widths: M & W • Price: $63-150 from Vionic Shoes, Zappos and Amazon.

Revere Emerald: APMA approved sandal

If your podiatrist insists on you wearing orthotics even in the summer, the Revere Emerald comes in clutch. A removable contoured footbed allows for the use of personal orthotics and three adjustable straps (forefoot, instep and ankle) ensure a secure fit.

Sizes: 5-12 • Widths: M & W • Price: $169.95 from Comfort Co. Shoes and Amazon.

Skechers Arch Fit- City Catch

If you like the Skechers price point, but have found them to be less than supportive, think again! Skechers new machine-washable Arch Fit collection features shoes and sandals with podiatrist-certified arch support, contoured memory foam insoles and bunion-concealing stretch uppers.

Sizes: 5-13 • Width: M • Price: $53-55 from Amazon & Zappos

Abeo Solstice

As a The Walking Company customer so aptly put it, “It’s so nice to have a shoe manufacturer that not only takes care of my orthopedic needs, but also my aesthetic needs.” The Abeo Solstice sandal features a built-in orthotic footbed with enhanced arch support and a real buckle for a secure fit around the ankle. We love that the Solstice comes in both a neutral and metatarsal (for high arches) insole.

Sizes: 5-11 • Width: M (run slightly wide) • Price: $79 from The Walking Company & Nordstrom

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
Naot Kayla

Minimalist but with maximum arch support. Basic design yet beautiful. This is the Naot Kayla. It’s been one of Naot’s bestsellers for years and for good reason. A cork and latex footbed molds to your foot’s shape over time and a 1.5″ wedge heel provides just enough lift. Available in 25 colors!

Sizes: Euro 35-43 (4-12.5) • Width: M & W • Price: $119-145 from Naot, Zappos, Nordstrom & Amazon

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
SAS Pampa Sandal

SAS Pampa sandal:  Every Zappos customer that left a review for the sandal awarded it five stars for comfort–every single one so far!  A contoured footbed with soft suede lining conforms to the natural arch and curves of the foot.

Extra cushioning at the ball-of-foot and heel comes as a welcome relief for those suffering with plantar fasciitis or metatarsalgia (forefoot pain). Available in whole and half sizes 5-12 (including hard-to-find 10.5 and 11.5), medium and wide widths at Zappos, and Amazon.

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).
Orthofeet Paloma

The Orthofeet Paloma will comfort your troubled feet. A removable orthotic insole allows for the use of Orthofeet’s specialized Arch Booster system (a small orthotic device that can be placed under the insole for added arch support). Adjustable straps and a mild rocker sole enhance the overall comfort and support of the Orthofeet Paloma sandal. Find it in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $97.95 at Orthofeet.com.

More arch support sandals that deserve mention: Mephisto Helen (see our review) and the Stegmann Layna wedge (see our review).

Plantar Faciitis sandals – which are the best? See Kirsten’s recommendations to a reader’s request…

Hello, Kirsten!
I have been reading your blog for a few months now. Your blog has helped me on my never-ending search for shoes. I have been living with plantar fasciitis for 2 1/2 years. After 1 1/2 years of treatment I finally gave up and had surgery. It has now been a year since my bone spur removal and heel resection. I still have pain. I have tried 3 different custom orthotics which lead to new pain in my knees, hips and lower back. I gave up on them.

Your blog lead me 2 months ago to Alegria Paloma. A welcome relief. I still have pain when the shoes are off but at least I can walk now without pain. I can not tell you how much I appreciate you for helping me find these shoes. I need to know what other brands of plantar faciitis sandals might help me? I think I should have a rocker bottom as well as a very stiff sole, no flex seems to help, but I think the key is the cushioning to keep my knees and hips from aching. Thanks so much for you and your blog!

I am very sorry to hear about your post-surgical heel pain. Yet, I’m happy to hear you’ve found temporary relief while wearing certain styles of plantar fasciitis shoes from Alegria footwear–a godsend to many with PF, over-pronation problems and other foot maladies. Since you’re well into sandal season in California, let me recommend five styles that won’t over-flex while providing good cushioning and support. Alegria sandals are a great place to start, but I’d like to show you a variety of styles from reputable comfort brands.

best sandals for plantar fasciitis
Vionic Mar

“These are cute and they really help me manage my plantar fasciitis pain. There’s a mild break in period to get used to the support, but I got zero blisters and can now wear these shoes very comfortably with almost every spring and summer outfit I have!” – Vionic customer Mrs Lindy611

Vionic has done it again with the stylish Mar platform sandal! Enhanced arch support takes strain off the fascia and a deep heel cup with back strap keeps the feet secure. An added bonus for those that hate velcro closures–it’s a real buckle! Available in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $85-135 from Zappos, Amazon & DSW.

Taos The Show

“I have a very hard time finding a comfortable shoe. I have 3 neuromas in each foot and if that’s not bad enough I have plantar fasciitis in one too! I bought the tan pair and they look so cute with flare or straight leg jeans, shorts or even a summer dress. I do a lot of walking too and these are steady and secure on my feet. Fit great. I highly recommend!” -Taos customer Bev

Adjustability, excellent arch and metatarsal support, shock-absorbing cushion all in a good-looking sandal. Many A+ reviews for fit, comfort and style. The Show by Taos is available in whole sizes 6-11, medium and wide widths for $139-155 from Taos Footwear, Zappos and Amazon.

Kuru Coda Muse

“As a teacher, I’m up and down on my feet all day. I have severe plantar fasciitis and these shoes ensure I don’t end the day crying.” – Kuru customer Sharon

The Kuru Coda Muse features Kuru’s patented, built-in KURUSOLE–a heel-hugging technology that flexes with each step to hug your heels and support your arches to help fight plantar fasciitis pain. There’s elastic goring at the top of each strap to accommodate different foot shapes. Available in whole sizes 5-12, medium width for $139 from Kuru Footwear.

Cushionaire Luna

“I’ve worn these for three years and finally getting a new pair. I suffer from plantar fasciitis and these sandals are super comfy to wear all day in the summer. Great, cheaper alternative to Birks.”- Amazon customer Chel

This Birkenstock Mayari dupe scores high marks for comfort and plantar fasciitis relief for a fraction of the Birk price tag. While the straps are made of faux leather, the cork footbed is covered in genuine suede. The arch support isn’t as aggressive as Birkenstock and there’s no metatarsal support, so keep that in mind. Available in sizes 6-12, medium and wide widths for $34.99 from Amazon.

Fitflop Lulu

“Great looking shoes. I bought them for the arch for my plantar fasciitis and they are very helpful. The leather is very soft. Comfortable from day one.” – Zappos customer Carey B.

This is just one of many Fitflop Lulu styles, but we endorse it because of the ankle strap which helps secure the heel. The MicroWOBBLEBOARD™ EVA midsole features a high-density heel, low-density midsection, and mid-density toe cap that provides arch support and firm cushioning. Available in sizes 5-11 for $68-110 from Fitflop, Zappos, Amazon and Nordstrom.

We’d love to hear from you! Leave a comment about your favorite sandals for plantar fasciitis.

Kuru Atom

This review of the Kuru Atom is sponsored by Kuru Footwear. The opinions are completely our own based on experience.

Our friend Tina reviews the Kuru Atom fitness shoe:

Thanks so much for letting me try these shoes. I’m in love. I will definitely be buying another pair when these are worn out. My new Kuru Atom shoes were comfortable right out of the box. Never did I feel like I was “breaking them in.”

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).

Kuru Atom

Putting the Atom to the test. Over the course of two weeks I:

  • Took the dogs for ¾ – 2 miles walks four times.
  • Wore to Orange Theory Fitness four times (they are now my go-to OTF shoe).
  • Ran a bunch of errands.
  • Walked and walked around Nashville visiting my son.

The Kuru Atom provided relief for my problem feet:

  • I have plantar fasciitis and definitely feel the support and cushioning at the heel– almost like a cup under my heel area.
  • I LOVE that the eyelets/laces start behind the big toe knuckle. I have a bone spur on my left big toe knuckle and have had no pain with these shoes.
  • There’s plenty of cushioning for my neuroma spots that can cause me pain and numbness. The toe box is perfect; not too wide, not too narrow.

Kuru Atom

I love the styling:

  • When your 27 year-old Orange Theory coach/firefighter stops you in the middle of your floor routine to ask if you got new shoes, asks what kind they are and if you like them, you know they are COOL! Seriously, this happened.
  • When you visit your 19 year-old at college in Nashville and he comments on your new shoes in the first 5 minutes of getting there, you know they are COOL!
  • The minimalist styling is similar to Allbirds Tree Dasher, but with more support and stability.
  • I can wear these sockless as the uppers are soft and breathable.

Barking Dog Shoes reviews and recommends the best footwear for people with various foot issues (as well as for women with average feet for whom comfort is a high priority).

Kuru Atom

KURU, please change one easy peasy thing:

The laces! I almost feel bad saying this because I love this shoe, but they really are annoying. Every time I walked the dog they would come untied. It also happened during a work out so I am forced to double tie. Still, I had to stop and untie and retie because the laces came too loose. My husband thinks I am reverting back to my childhood and need shoe-tying lessons again. HOWEVER, I disagree. I’m not sure why this happens…perhaps the round laces?? For now I will buy new laces and see if that helps.

A few more observations to help you decide if the Kuru Atom is for you:

  • The Atom is fairly flexible at the forefoot. If you have hallux limitus/rigidus, it may be too flexible for you (see photo at right).
  • The heel to toe drop is 8mm.
  • True to size and width.
  • Made in the USA

The Kuru Atom performance shoe is available in whole and half sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $150 with free shipping and returns/exchanges (for 45 days) from KuruFootwear.com.

At last, a recurring trend we achy-footed gals can get behind: the Chelsea boot.  Credited to Queen Victoria’s shoemaker, the style is sturdy, close-fitting around the ankle, with elastic goring on the sides and a heel tab in the back. Worn as riding or “paddock” boots in the 1800s, the style gained popularity among the equestrian community, worn by men and women alike. In the 1950s, a group of young artists, film directors and socialites from the Chelsea area of west London, incorporated the boot into their “look.” The Chelsea boot soon became an icon of the Mod subculture of London making its way onto the feet of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

We’ve rounded up 9 comfortable chelsea boots for a variety of foot problems. Take a look!

Kuru Quest hiking boots

This review of the Kuru Quest hiking boots is sponsored by Kuru Footwear. The opinions are completely my own based on experience.

The Kuru Quest came my way not a day too late as my feet have been begging for a supportive pair of hikers. We recently relocated to Indiana and are fortunate to live across from the White River and miles of wooded nature trails. With my chronic toe woes and aching arches, longer walks really get the dogs barking, if you know what I mean.

Heel cushioning: Kuru footwear features the patented KURUSOLE which is designed to hug and cushion the fat pad of the heel, relieving plantar fasciitis pain. While I’m not currently dealing with plantar fasciitis, my heels are sensitive to hard surfaces. The KURUSOLE keeps my heel in a secure position while providing excellent cushioning. How best to describe? It’s like an enclosed tiny trampoline for the heels that never hits bottom. Read more about the innovative KURUSOLE here.

Arch support: I find the Kuru removable insole to offer good arch support which is just as essential as heel cushioning in relieving plantar fasciitis pain as it eases strain on the fascia. For me, good arch support alleviates mid-foot arthritis pain and keeps my feet, ankles and even knees aligned.

Toe box: My favorite feature of my Kuru Quest boots is the wide, squarish toe box. With bunions and painful tailor’s bunions (due to arthritic changes in my feet over the years), it’s challenging to find a shoe with a toe box that accommodates both. I need a toe box that stays wide all the way to my mid-foot and doesn’t taper too soon–does that make sense? The Kuru Quest offers ample room for my wonky toes (even with socks) allowing me to cover more distance on the trails in comfort.

Overall feel and fit of the Kuru Quest: My feet feel supported and secure without pinching or irritation. At first the leather felt a little stiff, but with each wearing, it softens up more. The fit at the ankle is a little loose, but I have slim lower leg/ankle area. In my opinion, the Kuru Quest runs true to size.

Bonus feature: Not only is the ankle cuff area cushioned, the material has a subtle sparkle to it which is hard to pick up in photos. I really like it because it adds a little girly bling to a functional hiking boot (so do the light blue laces).

The Kuru Quest boot is available in whole and half sizes 6-12 for $175 from Kuru Footwear with free shipping and free returns within 45 days (in original condition). If you’re looking for a supportive hiking shoe, take a look at the Kuru Chicane.

How about you? Do you have a pair of Kuru shoes? What are your thoughts about fit and feel? Leave a comment and let us know!

I recently purchased the Oofos Oolala Sandal, and I have to say, it’s been a game-changer for my post-surgery feet. These sandals are made from OOfoam™, a unique material that absorbs significantly more impact than traditional foams used in footwear. I like to think of the firm cushioning standing in for my compromised joints and bones.

Oofos Oolala review

The Oofos Oolala Sandal provides exceptional arch support, which has been instrumental in taking the pressure off my sensitive forefoot (I recently had a cheilectomy and fifth metatarsal osteotomy). There’s a mild rocker sole also, which guides the foot through the stride while alleviating pressure on heel and toes.

I typically don’t like the feel of a toe post, but after a few days, it didn’t bother me at all. I understand podiatrists say to steer clear of flip flops, but Oofos sandals are anything but flimsy.

I find the fit is true. The Oofos Oolala sandal is available in whole sizes 5-11 for $69.95 from Oofos.com, Zappos, and Amazon. (FYI, the color in the video is called “Stardust”).

Has your doctor recommended rocker sole shoes, but you’re not sure which one to choose? We’re here to help! Rocker sole shoes benefit many who suffer from a variety of foot conditions: metatarsalgia, arthritis, hallux rigidus, plantar fasciitis, neuropathy…even painful bunions and hammertoes! Without getting too technical, a rocker sole shoe features a thick outsole with an upward curved toe area and often a curved heel area too. The goal of the rocker sole is to offload some of the pressure on forefoot and/or heel through the stride, alleviating pain and discomfort.

Let’s take a look at 5 of the best rocker sole shoes on the market today from athletic to casual-dress shoes:

Best rocker sole sandal: Alegria Bailee

We appreciate that Alegria is making more neutral-hued footwear these days in addition to their bright and cheery colors and patterns. The Bailee sandal is a newer addition to Alegria’s rocker sole collection. A non-flexing, slip-resistant outsole helps relieve pressure and a cork, polyurethane, memory foam footbed provides arch support and cushioning. Three adjustable straps allow for a custom fit. Find the Alegria Bailee in euro sizes 35-42 (5-12) for $45-120 from Zappos, Nordstrom and Amazon.

Hoka Clifton

Best rocker sole shoes for fitness:

You don’t even need to be a runner to enjoy the benefits of Hoka footwear. The Clifton  features a meta-rocker outsole (as most Hoka shoes do) which the company describes as “wheels for your feet,” meaning the thick rounded outsole propels the foot forward through the stride. Read more about the meta-rocker sole here. Zappos customer Sandy says this about her Cliftons, “True fit. Extremely comfortable. I need this style of shoe because my great toe joint is damaged, the slight rocker action takes the pressure off. Excellent quality.” Find the Hoka Clifton  in sizes 5-12, medium and wide widths for $115-145 from Hoka and Zappos.

Alegria Keli

A great option for casual-dress is Alegria shoes. Alegria means “happiness” in Spanish and that’s what they’ll bring to your soles. Most styles feature some form of rocker sole, cork-latex removable footbeds and a generous toe box. The Keli is a versatile slip-on featuring a rocker style outsole with tapered shaping at the heel and toe, which promotes a natural rocking movement with each step. See Kirsten’s full review of the Alegria Keli here.

Alegria recently expanded their sizing to include  euro sizes 43-44 (13-14) and wide widths. Find the Keli for $129.95 from Zappos, Amazon, and Nordstrom.

Dansko Professional clog

We’d be remiss not to mention Dansko Professional rocker sole clogs! No doubt you’ve heard about them, but have you seen these iconic clogs in leopard yet? How about neon pink?  It’s refreshing to see these tried and true rocker sole shoes in new patterns and colors every season. Find the Dansko Professional in euro sizes 35-43 (5-12.5) for $130-140 from Dansko.com, Zappos and Amazon.

Dromedaris Hornbill

Made in Portugal, Dromedaris is a lesser known comfort brand specializing in beautiful leather footwear with attention to detail. The Dromedaris Hornbill is a classic brogue style with roomy toe box, removable footbed with arch support, and a PU rocker outsole to offload pressure through the gait cycle. Find in euro sizes 36-43 for $160 from Amazon.

Alegria Bailee sandal

Best rocker sole sandals: Alegria Bailee, Dansko Season, Finn Comfort Sausalito

The Bailee is a new addition to Alegria’s rocker sole sandal collection and it’s getting glowing reviews from customers. Zappos shopper Allison says, “Many foot surgeries and issues and this sandal causes no pain, out of the box!” A non-slip, thick rocker sole will propel you forward through the stride in total comfort. Three adjustable straps allow for a customized fit while the cork and memory foam footbed cushions and supports. Find the Alegria Bailee in euro sizes 35-42 (5-12) for $89-109.95 from Zappos, and Amazon.

Dansko Season sandal

Zappos customer Holly says it best about the APMA-approved Dansko Season: “I’ve been on a mission to find the perfect summer sandal. So far I’ve tried at least 5 different comfort brands and multiple models. When these shoes arrived I knew I had found “The One”. I have bunions on both feet, arches that need support and narrow ankles. These shoes fit like a glove and the rocker action of the sole combined with the platform provide perfect cushioning for walking through the streets of Chicago from morning till dusk.” The Season features a buckle strap at the ankle and a hook and loop fastener at the forefoot for adjustability. This particular style features a lightweight PU outsole with a woodgrain look, and a cushioned memory foam footbed for extra comfort. Find the Dansko Season in euro sizes 36-42 (5-11.5) for $$85-125 from Zappos, Dansko and Amazon.

Honorable Mention: Finn Comfort Sausalito sandal, Alegria Debra in wide width, Oofos recovery sandals and shoes, SAS Walk Easy (available in multiple widths).
